OK completely off-topic, but hey that's what the Off-Topic forum is for!

What are your thoughts on the possible breakway group (i.e. 8 out of the 10 teams) in Formula One?

Personally I think it could potentially be the greatest thing to happen to Motorsport since Mr W Heel invented a round thing with a hole in the middle, bolted it on the bottom of his horse-dragged cart, and said, "I think I might name this round thing after myself"!

Mosley and Ecclestone have been in charge of Formula One for far too long IMO, and the sport is suffering as a result. It's all about the money for those two - hence why we now have Grand Prix in countries with little or no interest in Formula One.

The constant rule changes each year, the constant drive towards slowing the cars down, etc, all contributes to neutering what should be the pinnacle of motorsport. Until recently Mosley was advocating a single engine and gearbox manufacturer for all teams?!? The pinnacle of motorsport? I don't think so.

IMO Formula One should be the fastest, most challenging and most technologically boundary pushing sport on Earth, otherwise how can it lay claim to be the number One? Sure I know that saftey has to be paramount, but the cars have improved 1000 fold in that department over recent years and rightly so.

My opinion? (And it's controversial! ) No development cost caps, no driver aids at all, no limit on engine size, bring back turbos, and leave the rules the same for more than one season. I'm pretty sure that would make it the fastest, most entertaining motorsport on the planet. Even with an unlimited engine size it wouldn't become like dragsters as the damn thing will have to go round corners, so they'd soon find the optimum size. Without any driver aids, the emphasis would be back on the driver, but also on the team to make something driveable. As I say safety needs to be paramount, and the aerodynamics situation would need to be sorted out as cars find it hard enough to overtake as it is, but even so, I think it'd be interesting!

I'm in two minds on this. I definitely agree that Mosley and Ecclestone have been in charge for way too long and there is no one / nothing to hold them accountable. It has led to some very bad decisions. Having had some small scale business dealings with Mosley in the mid 90s I also can't stand the man, but that's beside the point.

I do think that Formula 1 has the ability to be a proving ground for technology that can then make its way into passenger cars, as has been seen before, and that has to be a good thing as well. By being at the leading edge of innovation we see progress faster than would otherwise happen.

However, I do have concerns about unlimited budgets simply because that will have a different meaning to different teams and there is a danger that the racing could become even more processional than it is now based simply on how much money can be thrown into the venture by the different teams.

In my ideal world the technical restrictions would be limited to banning the driver aids that remove the talent (to some extent), but there would still be a financial limit on what teams could spend to try and keep things equal. It wouldn't be ludicrously low as some have suggested, but $100million for development (i.e. excluding operating costs for actually running the races) should be high enough to keep things innovative while still allowing more than 2 teams to compete.

I think Ross Brawn has shown this year that it's talent rather than budget which brings success.

Button/Honda (I think) won just 1 race but with Brawn's skills, they're walking it with a budget I imagine which is a fraction of that of Ferrari or McLaren.

I've never understood why Bernie was able to earn so much from the media rights whilst the teams struggled to pay the bills.

I'm all in favour of F0CA blowing out the FIA and setting up their own championship.

World Motor Sport Council
24/06/2009 -
http://www.fia.com/en-GB/mediacentre...sc_240609.aspx

The World Motor Sport Council met in Paris on 24 June 2009. The following decisions were taken:

FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

All currently competing teams have committed to the FIA Formula One World Championship.

There will be no alternative series or championship and the rules for 2010 onwards will be the 2009 regulations as well as further regulations agreed prior to 29 April 2009.

As part of this agreement, the teams will, within two years, reduce the costs of competing in the championship to the level of the early 1990s. The manufacturer teams have agreed to assist the new entries for 2010 by providing technical assistance.

The manufacturer teams have further agreed to the permanent and continuing role of the FIA as the sport’s governing body. They have also committed to the commercial arrangements for the FIA Formula One World Championship until 2012 and have agreed to renegotiate and extend this contract before the end of that period.

All teams will adhere to an upgraded version of the governance provisions of the 1998 Concorde Agreement.

The following teams have been accepted for the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship.

TEAM - CONSTRUCTOR

SCUDERIA FERRARI MARLBORO - FERRARI
VODAFONE McLAREN MERCEDES - McLAREN MERCEDES
BMW SAUBER F1 TEAM - BMW SAUBER
RENAULT F1 TEAM - RENAULT
PANASONIC TOYOTA RACING - TOYOTA
SCUDERIA TORO ROSSO - STR TBA
RED BULL RACING - RBR TBA
AT&T WILLIAMS - WILLIAMS TOYOTA
FORCE INDIA F1 TEAM - FORCE INDIA MERCEDES
BRAWN GP FORMULA ONE TEAM - BRAWN TBA
CAMPOS META TEAM - CAMPOS COSWORTH
MANOR GRAND PRIX -
MANOR COSWORTH
TEAM US F1 - TEAM US F1 COSWORTH

In view of this new agreement and with the prospect of a stable future for Formula One, FIA President Max Mosley has confirmed his decision not to stand for re-election in October this year.

********************

FIA loses and FOTA wins, bottom line.

:nana: FIA

Squeeky Silicon Bernie manages to escape still controlling the venues and keeping CVS happy. I swear that guy is the Al Davis of F1.

Max saves face by finally doing what everyone has wanted him to do the last three years, which is jump off a bridge.

I highly doubt that we will see all of these new teams on the grid since part of the formula is that only constructors can race in F1 and not all of these teams will be able to design and build chassis for the next season.

All this to show that without Ferrari and to a slightly lesser degree McLaren Renault etal. there is no F1. FOTA will get the cost cutting measures they wanted but will have more input on how they do it, versus having PornoMax and the FIA ram a neverending stream of inane and everchanging rules and rulings down their throats.

Let's get back to racing...these last few soap opera years have been a drag!
