England are batting like they didn't expect to have to. They don't deserve to escape this Test and it'd be good for the series if they don't.

Sounds like the rain is going to save England - that's a real shame. Would have been great for the series and Australia deserved to win. Still what can you do. Shame too about the DRS. Seems to be a theme...

A somewhat fortunate draw from England's perspective. While I'm obviously pleased our lads retained the Ashes I think it's a real shame when the weather determines the outcome of the entire series. Australia clearly deserved the win in this match, and as you say Tim, it would've been good to keep the series alive. As it is its a bit of an anticlimax.

I've not been around too much this last week or so, but I've been reading up on the various opinions in this thread regarding DRS. Personally I'm all for the use of technology in sports to prevent incorrect decisions, but I feel the application of it in cricket has been poor. I can't help feeling its too much of a "halfway house" : either use it completely and 100% of the time, or don't use it at all.

But anyway, well played to the Aussies in this match - they deserved the win. But well played to the English lads on retaining the Ashes!

Driver, your location in "Rip-Off Britain" seems appropriate :-P

Have to agree the Aussies deserved victory in the 3rd test but nothing you can do about the weather. Not a good way to win the series.

Strange thing was I live only about 5 miles from Old Trafford and whilst it was overcast all afternoon, we hardly got any rain. Clearly the ground has its own eco-system designed to rescue a draw from the jaws of defeat! :D

I'm hoping we will have one English and one Australian umpire for the next series, as the umpiring has been dreadful for both sides. I believe 8 out of the top 12 umpires are English/Australian. Or is it that we all now have HD televisions that show the errors far more clearly? Possibly there were just as many shocking decisions in years gone by that we never noticed.
Anyway, on to Durham and hopefully we can just discuss the cricket rather than the umpiring. Looks like Onions will be in on his home ground, having taken 9 wickets in his last match, maybe replacing Bresnan.

Not been much discussion about the latest test - looks like a positive result weather allowing. England looked to be in real trouble with 3 down in the second innings but trying to claw their way back into it. Still have to favour Australia though.

My money's pretty heavily on England now. 200+ lead on this pitch is going to be hard to chase. Still at least Australia are making a fight of the last two tests. They pushed England all the way in the last test and have been very competitive in this one too.

Hope the last wicket pair can push the lead above 300. Sound like a terrible drop by Smith off Swann. Edit 299 to win..............Game on !!!!!!!!

Yeah, last England wicket has just gone as I type this, a pretty impressive fight back for England. Would like to see Australia make a match of it but 299 may be asking a bit too much.

I'd love to have seen the Aussie team of old chase this. Hayden, Langer, Ponting, Waugh, Gilchrist, Clarke. It's a formidable total but I'd love to see them chase it.

Conditions are showery (they're off at the moment) which tends to favour the fielding side - bowlers stay fresh and, trooping off and on again, the batsman are never really in. Forecast tomorrow looks ok though, so I'm sure we'll see a result. Eng favourites for sure - I'd be very impressed is Aus can make 300 batting last on that rather uneven track.

Well all credit to Australia, they are going for it now that play has resumed - skipping along at almost 4 an over at the moment, although that may partly be because of some rather undisciplined bowling.

I'm optimistic about a victory, particularly after a disappointing end to the 3rd test. Clearly another good innings from Bell but if our guys dig deep, we can do this. There's plenty of time which will help as our guys can really knuckle down. Glad the last two tests have been competitive.
