Wow that's amazing that they weren't injured, they're very lucky!! It was really really bad here on the jersey coast. My neighborhood is lined with beautiful pear trees in front of everyone's homes.... They're all down, it looks like a tornado ripped through here but fortunately no home damage that I've seen so far. Millions without power, phones are down, and cell phones work sparingly. It's gonna be a messy week. Hope everyone is safe.

I feel pretty fortunate. Every person I work with that I have been able to contact is without power. We have lost land line phone service but not power. No damage to the house I can see yet. Trees really bent and moved but none down on the property so far as I can see. I spent the mid-80s in Virginia Beach and rode out several hurricanes, last 10 years in Maryland so a couple more. This was by far the worst...not even close.

No kidding - they might have been laying and playing on that bed which is now gone. My other niece and her husband then payed closer attention to the ceilings and began poking holes in some and letting the water drain. I mean these folks and their homes are used to very bad weather. They didn't catch the eye and the worst rain and wind was on the back side of the storm - at least for that area.

My wife sent me this pic by her cousin's former neighbor who lives in Atlantic City. This is shot from the second floor of their home, the first floor obviously flooded

Oh, honey, there's a shark at the door.. Amazing.

Finally got power back, have some family staying with me who have no power and had 4 feet of water in their house.

Just 4 miles from me there are houses that were washed away. Houses in the middle of the roads, boats scattered around like toys, mattresses floating in the bay, and natural gas leaks all over the barrier islands. There are lines up to 5 miles long to get car gas, and food stores are mass chaos. Just devastating. If this storm hit in August during peak vacation season there would have been mass casualties, the population during the summer increases by about 10x along the coast here.

... and so I forward this back to my wife, who can tell me how she got the backstory wrong. Or maybe she "got" me. Actually, good, something like that would have been surreal.

Here's just one of thousands of devastating photos. This is a popular beach here at the jersey shore named Normandy Beach. Before and after

Here's another popular beach neighborhood at the shore, this is an affluent area with all multimillion dollar homes. Destroyed.

Jesus Serge, you story and pics really bring it home. Well as much as anything can without being there. Heartbreaking stuff. This frigging storm was only a Cat 1 but became a Superstorm with record low barometer. Too make its sheer size worse, it moved so damn slow - 10mph?

Glad you are safe and on dry ground and able to help out some family. What a nightmare.

Glad you guys are safe! I have lots of families in NJ & have told them all to prep well with gazzilion bottled water, instant food & fill up all cars full of gas & charge cellphones from car chargers. 'Cept when the power went down, so did cell service in their area. Only finally got back in touch (Facebook!) & thank God they're fine too. Fukushima without the radiation was accurate :(
