I agree with hnb - living in Sweden with a total tax pressure of 55% minimizes sympathy for others tax complaints... :) And if you have a business, as the starting point of discussion, the tax pressure is much higher than the 55%.

Agree, Driver8. Along with my fundamental dislike for high-taxing nanny states, what really irks me about the UK is the fact that we seem to get very little in return for the amounts they take from our pockets.

It'd be an interesting exercise to add up the total amount I pay in taxes each year (including things like VAT, TV license, petrol excises, NI, etc.) to see what the total figure actually looks like, then perform some sort of analysis to determine the actual value of the public services I receive in exchange for that money.

On second thoughts, I think I'd rather stay ignorant. Seeing the results would likely make me cry.

Don't forget some of the return for your tax etc is the magnificent institution know to all as the "Government" - yeah f*ckin' depressing 'ain't it?

Why we need the whole bloomin' lot of 'em (or any country does) is beyond me.

3 or 4 dozen ex Blue Chip CEOs and a pool of admin staff could do a lot better without all the political crap that goes with the whole system.

They (politicians) are the ones who convince us that we need a choice for the sake of democracy - what a load or horse sh*t!

Phew ................... OK - better now!!

I'm no lover of taxes  politicians  nanny states  etc

Gentlemen

This is particularly for those of you in the UK as I'm also a Brit. I know taxes aren't popular with anyone, and much of them are not well spent. If you want them to be raised more carefully and spent more effectively, I suggest you vote tory. However, please don't blame gays for taking your money, because -
-most of us are hardworking and pay taxes like you
-very little money gets spent on gay groups compared to others
-those groups that do get some money from tax are mostly doing very good things, like helping gay children who get beaten up at school or similar
-however most of us want the same things that you want from our taxes; better roads, hospitals etc

So please don't take it out on us if you're angry with Gordon Brown :)

Dominic

While you are entitled to your opinion and your views are respected I do have a question:

Are you a Breitling owner/enthusiast or just trawling the internet and forum for references to "gays" and then joining up to have your say?

Also, if you have another look and Doc D's original referance you'll see that it was, in fact, not an attack against any particular group but was an obsevation about the funding of various minority groups who seem to have some sort of power over the government of the UK. The majority live in fear of offending all sorts of people whether it be by flying the national flag on important days or sending a Christmas card to a fellow worker who sits next to someone who is not Christian.

Please feel free to reply but I totally refute any attack by any member of this forum against individual groups - this was just a general rant about the goverment of the UK - even more relevant now than when this thread was started!

BTW - I would have considered myself a Tory but now believe that they (politicians) are ALL as bad and greedy as each other.

No, I am indeed a breitling enthusiast, although new to this forum. I take your points, and my comments were intended to be a lighthearted retort rather than a statement of offence (I wasn't offended.)

I AGREE.....
My wife and I paid $75k to Uncle Sam and another $30K to the State of Louisiana.

Could have used half of the money to buy a few watches and pay for my kids high school tuition.

I want an MP's expense account..........! I could justify the need for at least 2 new watches one for each home....!

How do they get away with it? For me it would be "Benefit in Kind" and taxable @40%....!

Rant over.....!

I will trade with UA, probably not with Roff. All told, all taxes including fuel, sales, income, social security, medicare, capital gains, luxury, excess, airline fees, local & state property taxes and few other lines in the tax-attorney wife's spreadsheet I do not understand:
$395,412.67

And they wonder why there is such a strong under ground economy :poke: They are no different than organized crime if you consider their operating infrastructure. Allot of empty promises, give you something far less than its true value and expect you to pay a fee several times its worth. Have a full team of bullies available and ready to nag and apply pressure whenever they feel your not doing your part. MOST of all I dare you to try to avoid them. However, if your one of them you are almost guaranteed a job for life, work on a strict and often questionable schedule (ever visit a government run organization? you might be in cue for hours and as the clock strikes 12....oppps...its time for lunch we will be back in a hour, or I dare you to get there any time after 4PM) and your almost guaranteed a pay increase regardless of the state of the economy.

And there is absolutely NOTHING we can do about it!!!!
