I've lived here since 1983. Mild dust storms were more frequent then, but now the "concrete island" of the city extends so far to the south and east that they usually break up to almost nothing by the time the city gets hit.

But I've never seen two like these and the second one was minor compared to the one last week.

Haboob - Arabic for "a shitload of sand and dirt."

I'm chancing it and going to the car wash today. Dirt from when I was in the first storm is in every exterior nook and cranny, and I spent 30 minutes Sunday trying to wash it out myself, ultimately giving up. I just stayed in the office late last night but gave up at 8:30 to still drive home with enough dust remaining in the air for light fog-like visibility.

How much of a warning period do you get for something like that? When I lived in Minneapolis, tornadoes could hit out of nowhere, but the conditions had to be right, which put people on alert for the possibility of trouble. Is it similar with dust storms?

They start in the more pristene desert area south of Phoenix where the terrain is wide open and flat (to the north and west are mountains). They tend to move southeast to northwest and occur when a large thunder head collapses with terrific down forces. Usually, they break up to almost nothing when they get into the city - it's just breezy and dusty - not a true black out.

If you are listening to the radio, you can hear about one well over an hour before it gets to you. My office is in a corner on the 25th floor in a building that sits on a 45 degree bias - the corner faces due south and the window view from due east to due west. I can see them coming a long way off - IF I'm in my office.

We'll take the word of an expert for granted. But.... would like to see some pics...just to compare the two worlds.

looks about the same to me. The wall on ours was over a mile high too. I guess that's why the local and national press called it a haboob. Until that day we had isolated dust storms and I never heard of haboob. (working hard to avoid the word plays on haboob bouncing around in my head)

If that's what a ha'boob looks like, I sure as hell would never want to see a whole boob.
