Thanks Alex, that's lovely, it's understandable that you've enjoyed it.

Incidentally, I used an E36 325i convertible for my wedding (which I had to sell with the birth of my daughter  ) but no pics available I'm afraid (had no digital camera at the time).

All in all, I've had 8 big sixes until now without counting my dad's E3 2500 which I will restore soon. I recently found out that there is a new service offered for BMW classics from Munich. They restore your classic to factory-new status.

Thats very interesting. I didn't know that they are doing this now, I think its great. I can't help but think that it would would cost a pretty penny though.

I have one 3-liter six right now though in a boring configuration, my wife's X3. Put that thing in sport mode, though and it's like a carnival ride. Great sound, great fun, and one of the last vestiges of the identity of BMW during its boom years.

I do love the big six sound, more than the twin turbo, but man is that twin turbo fast. My best friend has one, and he will need all of the 4 year free maintenance he can get. I've moved on, gone old school while I can, with a 4.2 V8 in my Jag. BMW gets the most out an engine in terms of mixing sound, power and transmission response, but to paraphrase an automotive writer from a few years ago, that V8 under the spurs sounds like expensive silk ripping.

That's for sure Alex. But they do it like professionals. First, they send a team of two to examine your car, wherever it is in the world, then they give you an estimate of what it needs to be done, transport to Munich included.

For example, for my dad's 2500, that will be $ 5'000 for an estimate.

If you're interested, there is much more info at: http://www.bmw-classic.com/2/webmill.php?id=630863

Then, when they're done, you're invited to pick up your "new" classic from BMW Welt (http://www.bmw-welt.com/web_rb/bmw-welt/en/index.html). A must visit place not only for BMW fans but for all car aficionados.

I voted no. Putting my money where my mouth is, I have a 135i w/ sports package, love it. It's perfect. Wouldn't give up the forced induction; Ever. I can't see a single downside to having the turbo'd inline 6.

Don't say maintenance/fuel costs. If I cared about that I would have bought a Camry or some other tin can.

That is a great service and a great idea! I'm sure others will follow in BMW's footsteps and commence such an offering for their classic models. There is a certain level of tranquility that comes with knowing your baby is taken care by professionals with the right "savoir-faire" from the company that built the car in the first place 8)

That's true Alex. It's going to be cost prohibitive for many. But for the right sentimental reasons, I bet the cost is not relevant.

Sure it's gonna cost an arm and a leg. But look at Alex' stupid grin when he got his Ling back from service. Imagine yourself at BMW Welt receiving your "brand new" classic back. Am I sentimental? You bet I am.

Touché, you can bet I would have a huge grin on my face  and it would all have been worth it 8)

I have never owned a Beamer, but with a new car on the horizon they have started to come into my radar. As of now I am driving a 06 Cadillac CTS standard model I purchased right out of college and enjoyed the transition from a pick up to a sporty sedan. I would like to now jump into a two door coupe as I really enjoy the "driving experience".

Anyhow, Long story short i see bunch of you guys drive your autos for years, and keep them in great shape. There are lots of years of ownership amongst the posters.

So my question to you is this....If I am going to shell out anything north of $40K I think it would be practical that it is a car you could drive for many years to come. How do you guys find that your Beamers hold up over the haul of 20+ years?

Then, you really do not know what you're missing.

I've never had any problems with my Beamers, even though that is not the case with everyone here. But it is also true that I have always kept them in pristine condition and you will never give my Beamers their real age when you see them.

If you're looking for a two-door coupé, I can suggest the new F13 6 series which I find of an exceptionally beautiful design (interior and exterior). General consensus is that it has top of class performance and technique and that is not only my, biased, opinion. You can find more info and several articles, pics, videoa and tests here: http://www.bmwblog.com/category/bmw-6-series/page/2/

On a follow up Thomas, I don't know where in Texas you're located but this link might prove useful: http://www.bmwusa.com/standard/content/ ... fault.aspx

Whoa!!!! I think you have overstated my earning power....hahah. I was thinking more along the lines of the 335i asa two door, but I have no doubt been digging the 6 series for some time. Alas the 335 is a bit closer to my price range but good looking out.

The main interest I have in coupes is the sportiness and handling, but above all I am looking to get something that has a lot of power within the first 3-4000 RPMs. the cadillac has that really "floaty" feel when city driving, and although I do like the new CTS Coupe I have read that it drives very similar to the sedan :?

I don't want to highjack the thread, and for the record I would like to state that I love BMW, but what about the Audi S5, I am also pretty confident you can find one in your price range, if not, then just go with the 3.2L
