I do however find other things offensive such as calling a wife an assett or a belonging  That said I take on board your comment and will in future refrain from taking part in any thread started by a certain individual :lingsrock:

If I have said anything to offend any of you good people I openly say Sorry, I just found it hard to understand how someone can put so much worth on materialistic items yet have no pride or value in themselves or their well being?

Agree with your sentiments. I guess I am just a little sensitive at the moment as I am trying (and failing badly  ) to lose 2 stone of weight for my Winter Whistler ski trip (that is recreational skiing - not competing in the olympics )

I expect your own particular BMI issue is down to too much partaking in the good old Brains S.A?

For me to lose weight I am going to have to spend all my money on watches so there is none left to spend on real ale! (or move to Australia where the Beer tastes like p**s anyway! - oh no, hope I don't start another side issue flame-off!)

OXFORD dictionary meaning: "Leave - To go away from." Where does that say or mean that one can not return? I left. Went to Rolex. Returned here to "see what's up". WTF is wrong with that? I am happy that you do not mind if I stay or go. That has me all warm and cozy inside...maybe even a little misty-eyed....

Jeez you talk about negativity, but who introduced it to this thread?? And I noticed you went back and edited your first post to make it more pointed and hard-hitting by raking up your disagreement with T&G. If that's not being negative on a thread designed to encourage less mean-spiritedness, I don't know what is.

Oh and back on the original topic - it wasn't aimed at anyone in particular : just something I noticed recently and maybe something we could/should all be mindful of. Forums allow people to both agree and disagree with each other, debate and discuss, share info, and all that good stuff, but very personal insults have a way of escalating and serve zero purpose on here.

Anyway, I've said my piece so I'm leaving it there before it turns into yet another round of slagging each other off.

I've been around here a couple weeks and everyone has been great, kinda hard for me to understand that someone who has only been a member here a month longer than me would know so much about what goes on with this site and the people who take time out of their own schedule to help run it??? Everything is real cool here and by the way i'm on the rolex forum too and it's seems alot like this place, guys that love their timepieces and try to help others!! But hey thats just me!

About 1/3 of the way through this thread I became very confused. Apparently during my absence people with poorly medicated bipolar disorder joined to complain about the forum. I personally have always found everyone here excedingly helpful, especially back in the day when I knew nothing at all (insert wise-ass comment here -- Roff, Bnewbie etc....) They helped me dramatically increase my knowledge out of pure altruism. I had never even heard of a perpetual calender or a minute repeater until the Professor's treatises on all things horologic. So if I have never stated it in print "Thank You" to all on here that really make it special for me. For those who disparage it, especially those who join only to disparage it: Bugger off!!! (Another great phrase picked up from my UK friends on this forum) :lingsrock: :lingsrock:

Referring to the original post by D8, I agree wholeheartedly, and I also apologize for my participation in the threads by the unique gentleman. Although I don't feel my comments were unwarranted or particularly nasty, I could have taken the high road and said nothing.

Keep up the great work mods and Admin! :lingsrock:

As for the rest of this thread... I plead the 5th.

I kind of saw this thread coming. After the "return of Archie" thread, especially. I am just as bad ......regarding him, but I think I did restrain myself during that last bit.

Thinking back to a few weeks ago, the OTHER thread did have my participation and ....well...... It got carried away. I will note that the other member did post a public apology thread to the offended party and I was going to reply with my apology as well, afterwards, but the thread was removed before I could. (as stated that it would be)

We have to understand that some people are just way more sensitive than others, some can’t refrain from a poke here and there and some can’t stop dragging it all out instead of just dropping it.

As Driver8 suggested, we need to remember our common tie and get back to the fun ways of the past, all the time. I would say that usually we are pretty courteous, here and the problem threads and negative interactions are few and far between. I, for one, don’t believe that either Driver8 or Roff and especially the Admin have any type of agenda or do they purposely try to take sides. The exception would be correcting a blatant misstatement of facts regarding something watch related.

just my .02

Agree with you there Taffy!

I've not been posting much lately but I come for a look everyday. I enjoy reading the posts even though I maybe don't reply but I too have noticed that recently there seems to be more and more people who seem to be very willing to get into heated debates or like to goad a few of the more experienced posters on here which really gets my back up. Personally this makes the experience of this forum a little bit cloudy! 99% of the people on here are great people with their own opinions, you don't have to agree with everyone all of the time.

I'm sure most of you know who the 3 or 4 idiots are but let them get on with it and if like me you do bite your tongue generally they will piss off and leave us to get on nicely! :D

Back on track - Driver 8 - well said!

Cheers

Thanks for all your support with this guys. As I said, the original post was in no way directed at anyone in particular, and I really can understand how it's difficult not to just bite your tongue at times when something or someone just gets your back up. I think we've ALL probably been a bit guilty of it occasionally - myself included - but we're only human after all.

Anyway, I think Bronco summed it up nicely when he said we're all here because of a common tie, so let's get back to the watches! Case closed.

agree 100% this is a great site and I think it would be a great shame if we let a few idiots ruin it for all of us :lingsrock: Especially when I have now got 4 lings again

An interesting thread. I would like to submit a couple of observations.

First as the forum grows there will be many more opportunities for differences of opinions and misunderstandings.

Second, the subject we discuss on the forum is by nature an emotional one. Lets face it, there is no logical reason for our purchases no matter how much we try to spin it. With the passion and emotion involved in this subject and the nature of the internet, it is a wonder things are as civil as they are. But that is why I like it here.

Submitted for your thoughts.

D8 - your starting point on this thread was spot on. Whilst I don't post much here I am a frequent reader. I follow all manner of threads, and I too have noticed an increase in disagreement and personal attacks. However, thanks to the glory of the interweb people form all over the world can and do participate on this forum. It is from this point where I believe some of the issues have arisen. This is by no means an excuse for some of the more vicious exchanges but I do think that local interpretation has had an impact. It is also hard to get sarcasm/irony across and this sometimes can and I think has lead to the start of some of the exchanges.

The other part of it is that people on here and the rest of the web can/do hide behind anonymity of usernames. There is nothing wrong with usernames per se but it enables/empowers people to be more forthright, aggressive, rude or even con. We all subscribe to this by having user names and I don't think we should use real names, though many people here are happy to share their real names.

I think that some people need to develop thicker skin (this is not to say that skinny people are more touchy than our larger friends) and some need to think more before they let fly with a blur of digits! I often feel that counting to ten, breathing deeply and re-reading a potentially inflammatory post will often soften the response. However, this is not say that people are not allowed issue a sh*t-a-gram if they feel it warranted.

As most have pointed out this is generally friendly place, with huge amounts of advice, support and genuine camaraderie. I personally will always take the rough with the smooth and accept this place for what it is - a fantastic site and great resource with excellent contributions from 99.9% of members.

Peace and Love

Toby :lingsrock:

PS sorry that was a bit longer than intended!
