Not big on handguns myself. Prefer over/under shotguns, mostly for clay, occasionally out in the field. Right now have a Browning Citori that I love.

One of the reasons for the CCW vs CCP is that here in Alaska, you don't actually even need a permit.

On top of my other weapons, I've had two AR-15's on order for about 10 months now. Should be shipping any day!

Yup. Nevada, Utah and Florida. With those three state's I'm legal in a lion's share of the US.

Except for the crims, who can get them whenever they like.

My biggest beef with over-restrictive gun control, and particularly that imposed here in the UK, is that it explicitly takes away my right to protect myself. Legally I can't carry a gun, pepper spray, a knife, or any form of baton without the threat of arrest.

All of which is fine as long as those making these laws accept that, since they've taken away my own right and ability to defend myself, they are now fully responsible for my protection. Naturally, they never will be - try suing the cops for failing to protect you from being mugged and see how far you get. They're not legally obliged to do anything to assist you at all.

The line parrotted in the UK is that if you're in trouble you should simply "call the police". And when they fail to turn up? Or when they get the address wrong? Or they arrive to late or don't have a spare patrol car to send? What happens then? The best you'll get from them is a "sorry", but you won't be able to here it because you'll be either in a coma or dead.

They can't protect you, and they're not required or obliged to by law. But at the same time they'll happily remove your right to protect yourself.

Oester, I understand you not liking handguns, but I'm a Police Officer and in the CRAZY USA I'm glad the bill I was speaking of passed. I have been in law enforcement since 1977 and have seen that here in the U.S. things can go violent anytime and any place. I soon will be retiring from law enforcement and the thought of not being able to carry would be tough after all these years. I have been in several "off duty" arrests where I needed my handgun ( in progress crimes against other persons, ect ). It is to bad the way our world has become so viloent and I don't think its going to get better anytime soon.

If your a LEO you should always carry. And all the retired LEO's I know all still carry.

In Switzerland, there are approximately 46 guns per 100 people in the country, a number that dwarfs England's 5.6 guns per 100 people (Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_co ... _ownership). Yet the UK has far more murders per capita than Switzerland (Nationmaster: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_m ... per-capita). How can this be? Could it possibly be that guns themselves don't equal crime? In Japan, where firearms are more strictly regulated than the UK, the suicide rate is one of the highest in the world. This all tells me that people will find a way to hurt themselves or others, guns or no guns. You're just fooling yourself if you think fewer guns equals less crime.

Yet phrases like the one you posted are continually bandied about by anti-gun forces; and apparently, they work, particularly on those that are too lazy to check the validity of the claim or even question the facts behind such claims.

My biggest question: if gun control is so good, why do anti-gun groups have to rely on statistics taken out of context or even outright lies to get their point across?

If one consider it freedom when you have to carry a gun to protect yourself, then I'm quite happy I don't have to share that view.

That is one of the few things I like in the USA.
