One of my biggest concerns about any government-funded healthcare system is the inevitable erosion of liberty that comes along with it. When those in power are footing the bill for your medical care, they soon develop a sense that they're entitled to manage more and more of your personal life.

Watch, then, as your vices such as tobacco and alcohol are taxed higher, you're suddenly threatened with fines for failing to wear a seatbelt or motorcycle helmet, your bacon cheeseburger is accompanied with a stern warning plastered across the packaging, and various bureaucrats and bodies regulatory are employed or established to regulate and control your daily life at the expense of the taxpayer.

All, of course, in the name of saving money for the healthcare system. In the UK some local councils have gone as far as regulating the number of holes that a salt shaker in your local burger joint can have in an attempt to reduce salt consumption and therefore heart complaints.

Is that the sort of world you want to live in? Where will it stop?

Coincidentally, there's an interesting piece on this here.

I know a few people who work with people in perhaps the worst state of health and one thing that is consistent with almost everyone is the willingness to give up just about anything for better health and/or proper health care. When faced with a health crisis most are willing to downsize in their home, car, give up luxury items, trips etc but I've yet to hear of one willing to give up health for a bigger house, nicer car (with the exception of those willing to damage themselves for fame and glory and call themselves professionals).

I guess at the end of the day there are pro's and con's with just about anything.....

In Italy is different. pensions are lower then in Canada and refugees are often sent back in the sea or, when accepted, they don't get anything from the Governament. You may ask, where are all the money we pay on taxes going? politician pockets. No politicians earn as much as Italian ones if you some benefits and pay. every 6-8 months they sit together and vote for increasing their own pay, and nobody votes NO...
I can understand why Berlusconi and Tremonti can afford all those nice watches. lately I heard Tremonti bought a IWC Portuguese.. I love that watch and probably never own it... that's not right!
