Now Australia have selected a left arm spinner called Beer (at least it fits our country!) who has played 5 first class games with an average of 39! Hauritz has 70 odd test wickets at 34!

When will the selectors learn that you pick your five best bowlers, regardless of bowling style? There's no point including a spinner who's crap just because "we need one". For years they didn't include Stuart Clarke because he was "too much like Glenn McGrath".

Having said that, now beer will go out an take a 5 for and I'll have egg on my face.

Don't get me started! I think my post history in this thread will show this has been a long-standing complaint of mine. The selectors are currently obsessed with the notion that we must have a spinner in the side, even if that spinner isn't Test class (Hauritz isn't Test class either, for that matter). A few years ago they were obsessed with having an all-rounder in the side, even though we already had Adam Gilchrist. Where's that soap- box smiley...?

What this one :soapbox:

I'm with you, don't get me started...

Did you see in the paper the other day that Hilditch has pretty much been told he's out after the World Cup. It's about time....and he even wanted to stay. What was he thinking...

The Australians are in shambles at the moment. Something like 36 new players since McGrath retired (or something like that), most with only a test or two before they were axed.

This test will be a struggle I'm thinking (I hope they prove me wrong). No Katich, no bowlers, England red hot favourites for sure (did I just say that  )

Thanks Tim, that's the one. I was posting from my ipad the other day and it didn't seem to work, so I'll post it now instead.

:soapbox:

The media here seem to be just as clueless - judging from yesterday's sports pages in a certain Sydney tabloid, they actually thought Warne making a comeback was a realistic prospect. I understand and accept that sometimes we are going to be the weaker team, but the sheer idiocy of the collective response at the moment is staggering.

Couldn't agree more about Hilditch. Last year I put my foot in my mouth when I had a rant (not dissimilar to the above) to a colleague who it turned out knew him personally.

12 hours to go. Remember when we used to get excited about the WACA's bounce, watching visitors hop about? I miss those days. Neither the WACA nor our bowling attack is what it used to be.

Yeah, or watching our guys hop about, if the visitors happened to be the West Indies in the 80s or early 90s.

Dead boring pitch these days by comparison.

Decent recovery from the abyss but if England get through the morning session tomorrow OK, you have to fancy them racking up a big score. Pitch looks pretty tame compared to yesteryears.

I'm not trying to be too negative but I think I'm at the stage now where I'm willing to congratulate England for winning back the ashes! Your team is currently just too good for us in all facets of the game. You can't win a game let alone a series if you can't bat and I think it's fair to say that only Watson and Hussey, out of the entire top order, are in any sort of form at the moment (it was hard losing Katich). Haddin is our second best batsmen (and has played really well but...)

I also can't understand why Australia is so keen to cut the bowlers for one poor performance where the problem is mostly in the batting. How can you expect the bowlers to bowl well when they're defending nothing.

Anyway we'll see how today goes but I expect England to score 500-odd. Well done for routing us!

No I hadn't forgotten, that was poorly worded, thanks for pointing that out

What I meant to say of course was retain the ashes i.e. actually win them in Australia

I feel exactly the same, Tim. I was thinking yesterday evening that it makes no difference whether we make 200 or 300, if we can't bowl England out. They'll probably be 2/300 by late this afternoon.

Worringly, the pitch looked like it settled down during the afternoon. The WACA has not been conducive to results in recent years, and it seems to have less and less as the match goes on. I commented to a mate a couple of days ago that the most likely way to force a result there is to put the other side in first, and bowl them out cheaply. And that seems to be exactly what England have done.

What a difference Johnson finding his swing makes, eh? Now if they would stop trying to bounce the tail enders out they might knock off the tail.

What did you put in Johnson's tea?

78-0 to 98-5 in an hour and the test, series and ashes suddenly looks to be alive again!

3 days to go so a result is likely. An Aussie win and things start getting interesting.

Hopefully this was just a bad day at the office for England and Hussey's wicket is vital tomorrow.

With a bit of luck, I'll be back home to catch the start of play. The first hour could decide the ashes!

Straightening Johnson's runup seems to have helped him to keep his body in line and his wrist behind the ball. Huge difference. The press have been giving the selectors/ coaching staff heaps for keeping Johnson out of the recent state match and working in the nets with him. Seems to have been a good decision. Now if Hussey can just make 150...

One of the bad things about living in the US is that no-one has any idea of what cricket is therefore trying to find a place to watch it is a joke. I'm living on the news reports at the moment.

So it seems like we might snare a rabbit out of a hat in this game. I couldn't believe it when I saw the scores this morning. Is it a bowlers wicket for those who can actually watch it? So once we remove Bell and Collingwood it should pretty much be over. England need what 200 or so to win? Should be an interesting 4th day. Well done to Johnson, nice way to complete a comeback.
