It is illegal, but the worst that can happen is if you get caught they will be destroyed, maybe a repeat "offender" would get a warning letter with an empty box. Happens all the time, no one really cares.

Hmmm destroyed, or confiscated and enjoyed by the ATF folk?

Nope, destroyed! In my latest trip to the USA They confiscated my cigars at Houston International and pulled out a pair of evil-looking scissors and just went through them :x

Dont blame them as they were just doing their job but the utter stupidity of it all. :? How does destroying my cigars hurt communist Cuba again?

I occasionaly smoke cigars. There is a shop here in Slidell, Louisiana that I can get one or two every once in a while. I used to work for CBP and when we flew down south we could usually get them in the Republic of Panama. Not saying how we got them back into the country. Very nice Cuban Cohiba's.

There are areas of the aircraft that no one would think to look. A lot of nice hiding places. There has been more Cuban cigars brought back to the U.S. by CBP pilots, radar operators and mechanics than they would care admit to.

There is a lot of confusion regarding U.S. Citizens and Cuban cigars and this might clear some of that confusion up. Apparently it is against U.S. law for a U.S. citizen to even touch a Cuban cigar, regardless of where it is located. We probably can't even be exposed to it's smoke without being labeled a law breaker :D

If the links don't work, copy/paste this into your web browser to see the U.S. Customs website regarding U.S. citizens and Cuban cigars: http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/clearing/restricted/cuban_cigars.xml

Also from the U.S. Treasury Department's site here: http://www.treas.gov/offices/enforcement/ofac/programs/cuba/cuba.shtml; see the pdf file ccigar2.pdf

Here is an excerpt from the pdf file:
Quote:
Transactions Involving Cuban-Origin Goods in Third Countries
The question is often asked whether United States citizens or permanent resident aliens of the United States may legally purchase Cuban origin goods, including tobacco and alcohol products, in a third country for personal use outside the United States. The answer is no. The
Regulations prohibit persons subject to the jurisdiction of the United States from purchasing, transporting, importing, or otherwise dealing in or engaging in any transactions with respect to any merchandise outside the United States if such merchandise (1) is of Cuban origin; or (2) is or has been located in or transported from or through Cuba; or (3) is made or derived in whole or in part of any article which is the growth, produce or manufacture of Cuba. Thus, in the case of cigars, the prohibition extends to cigars manufactured in Cuba and sold in a third country and to cigars manufactured in a third country from tobacco grown
in Cuba.

I think I will go fire up a nice Cohiba.

I personally find Cubans a bit over-rated. Back when the embargo was put into place, the country was in fact making some of the very best the world had to offer...That isn't the case today...Some of the very best tobacco in the world comes from many other countries, these days, and the cubans now have just a tiny, pinky finger grip on a market they used to hold in the palm of their hand...Now, having said that, I've had some good sticks, but nothing a Patel Decade (1990) couldn't touch, or say a year old, well seasoned Opus X. I think all too often, we want to smoke a cuban, because they are as illegal for us Americans to smoke, as the day is long. Even in a foreign country, according to the law, touching them is illegal, as previously mentioned. Now Gym, I'll send you all you want, out of one of my humidors, I've got a stock that would have the ATF kicking down my door to get to, not to mention every member of the BVSC, and they've all been bought, on site, by me, so I can guarantee their authenticity... Heck, I'll make you an offer you can't refuse...pm me your address, and which direction you go with cigars (full-bodied, middle of the road, or mild) and I'll send you one of my very best cuban sticks, smoke it with a little Frangelico in a tumbler, no ice, just about a shot...the next night, I'll have you smoke the other stick I'll be sending you, this time, with a tumbler of a fine rum, on the rocks...something like a Matusalem, or even a Mount Gay, pure cane, and tell me which one turned out better for you. I've got a number of cigars that I've paired, damn near perfectly, and I'd gladly enjoy you having a few of them, on my dime. Everyone has their own tastes, and what is pleasing for the taste buds, so I don't want this to sound like I'm saying "cubans suck!" I just offer my opinion that there are much better smokes out there, that you can get at your local shop, by the box, and smoke in an ATF agents face, without having to worry about being cavity searched, later that night! The End :D

I like smoking them but I think I like the collecting and aging more. Especially when you go and buy a really expansive one and just play the waiting game on when to smoke it. I've got a few waiting patiently. Once I get my CPL I'll have it. How are the Cohiba Magico?
