So I am in the market for a DSLR Camera. I am rather educated with digital cameras however, not so much with the DSLR's in regards to what really to look for when it comes to the lens and the little thing that make for a really good camera.

I really do not think I need anything crazy in regards to mega pixels because I do not see myself blowing up photos to 24"-36" or what not. I understand that mega pixels make for a better photo but can be pointless if your going to be keeping your photos on the smaller 8 x 10" size.

I would like to have something 1080p HD however I THINK I would take something 720p (or shouldn't I?) if it really isn't too noticeable???

Also, keep in mind I want something that I will not "grow out of" the next day but then again something that will last me quite a bit of time.

Budget would be $800 MAX.

Thus far, I have been looking at the following.... what do you think of these?

Sony a33(or) a55 - is the a55 really THAT much better? I here the Translucent Lens are amazing???

Maybe but you could pick up a used 500d a little cheapefr maybe with a couple of lenses as well.

I use a Nikon D60. It takes great pictures and was budget friendly. However it does not shoot video... I have another camera for that.

If you want to have a classic DSLR camera you can have Canon EOS Digital like 550D with basic lens 18-55mm, its good choice i think and 800 USD is OK price range:

Dont forget that the image is not about the camera, the best pictures are before and after the camera in the scene and in your eyes

Canon Rebel xsi. My friend was looking for something similar about 6 months ago and my photographer buddy recommended it. Also, if you are coming from a point & shoot, most of these SLR cams dont have a "live view" mode, aka being able to see the image on the LCD before you snap the shot. Most photographers recommend using the view finder anyway, but its still a selling point for some. The Canon has a live view mode.

Canon EOS Rebel T1i 500D DSLR Camera

15mp camera and it would do ALL you would probably ever need with plenty of room to grow (different lenses). A quick eBay search showed a NEW one with a 2 gb card for $659.

Easy point and shoot modes and a bunch of customized pro level functions.

I bought the newer model the T2i 550D and LOVE it, but it was a whole lot more because it was/ is the latestest greatest.

Keep in mind though, you needto spend the extra $$$ and buy the highest speed memory cards you can get and possibly an extra battery, if you are going to travel for the whole day and not have a charger near. Although I think mine will shoot 500 pictutures easily on one battery without flash.

Thanks for the info BronoSport! I think Canon will be the way I go from what I keep hearing! However, do you know anything about the Sony a33/55's? I heard they were rather nice as well?????

they are almost the same quality Canon, Nikon,Sony,... its just the one that feels the best in your hands ... its like a omega or a breitling. both really comparable both one favores a nikon the other a canon ...

the 550d is a good and cheap choice ( 600d is out, but only has a turnable screen and is a lot more expensive)
alternative is the nikon 3100
for video the sony a35 is the best choise : better autofocus with his translucent mirror...

invest in lenses and not in the camera

I believe I have made my final decision which will be the Canon T1i (500D) DSLR...however, I have been doing some thorough research and found that the "standard" lense EFS 18-55mm isn't too great. .... should I just get the body and find a better lense? I think the one it comes with is at the bottom of the barrel in regards to all the lenses that Canon offers, maybe the next best one wouldn't be so bad??? I would only like to have 1 good lense and not multiple lenses for each occasion.

recommendations please!

Or if you have personal experience with this camera...what do you honestly think of the lense? Does it have the "angel effect" in some pictures of people?

My T2i came with that 18-55mm lens and honestly, I use it all the time. Its a good all around lens. I put a UV filter on mine and that made a noticable difference. Since buying my camera I have bought a macro lens (which is noticably better quality, but limited application) and a 50mm fixed for portaits. I dont own any of the "L" lenses and judging from the price, I probably never will!!

There are always good deals with the T1i or T2i where they bundle the body with the 18-55mm and sometimes another lens, but the price in the deal generally makes the lens' so cheap your better off just doing the package to get the lenses.

best all round lens is the 18-200mm
second too that is the 18-135

as you are a amateur photographer it's all you need. the 18-55mm is a normal lens but you don't have a large zoom capacity...
i always recommend the zoom lens from te beginnen other wise, U will end up with 2 lenses thta do exactly the same thing.

I am a Nikon man, so I would get the D7000 as it is phenomenal, though I assume the Canon is just as good. Canon bodies tend to be a little better, and Nikon lenses tend to be a little better, either way you go its better to spend time practicing than it is spending money on the camera.
