Secondely, thats a tough question to answer, the middle east, Greece, and Turkey, share a number of cultural similarities, and I am not just talking cuisine. When it comes to music, allot of Oud based music sounds similar I would think to the non familiar, especially if you are accustomed to other string instruments such as the guitar, which is a later version of the Oud (literally The Wood)

If you are really interested in that music, I recommend listening to Oud alone to get a sense of how it is played. Here is a particular piece I am fond of:

Dont think that many will enjoy that music, I think it has more with growing up with one form over the other. I find the Oud more soulfull than the guitar, though that is probably the reverse in your case.

Great links Altair. Incredible musicians. I find oud music to be very relaxing. Plus, I don't think there is another instrument that when heard anywhere in the world, immediately calls to mind a distinct culture or region the way oud does.

To me it doesn't matter what you are used to - great music is great music. It doesn't matter where you're from, what language you speak, what color your skin is, or what you call the higher being that you believe in. Music, like food, has the amazing ability to cross all barriers and bring people together.
