I was just wondering if any one has been here? I always watch these videos on youtube of the beach just before the runway...

I've been there three times, and I can asssure you, none of the photos you've seen have been modified in any way. The runway really is that close to the road and the beach. The 747 comes in on Thursday afternoons (or at least it used to) and always draws a crowd. Every once in a while you'll see some fool try to hang on to the chain link fence while a plane takes off, but they are usually knocked down by the jetwash. They have recently expanded the runway a bit at the far end, so planes don't come in quite as steep as they used to, but it's still AMAZING to watch. There is a watering hole (The Sunset Beach Bar -- that's their yellow roof in the photo) at the far end of that beach and I have spent many an afternoon just watching the planes land -- and the other eye candy that might be around, of course.

St Martin is a great island, we really love it. Plus they have an authorized Breitling dealer there!

I'd love to fly the approach over Maho Beach.

Very neat island.

If you think that approach is hairy, check out St. Barts! By far, my favorite!

You have to have a permit to land there, very short runway.

Have you flown into Saba (right near St. Maarten)? I hear that's pretty adventurous as well.

Every time we are there, the phenomenon known as "sand gravity" takes over, and I have a really hard time getting out of the beach chair to do much of anything. Stick with what your good at. That's what I always say.

I've flown into and out of St Maarten a number of times on Caribbean hopper aircraft. Even as an aviation nerd I didn't realise the legendary status of the place until I found airliners.net!
