I know I am dating myself here. When I went to see Alice in Wonderland last weekend with the wife (and one guess as to whose idea that was  ) a preview starts and I hear the voice of Bruce Boxleitner. He as a pretty distinctive voice. And I think, "Wow...he is actually in another movie? The only movie he ever did was Tron." Then his character starts talking about a text message from an arcade. Then eventually we see this rundown arcade with 80s video games in it, and I think, "could this be another Tron movie?" Then, as if in direct answer to my question, the Tron video game at the far end of the arcade is uncovered and I know there is a movie coming out that I must see.

The rest of the preview just totally blows me away. I think I am literally salivating by the end of it.

Is there anyone else out there who even remotely shares my enthusiasm?? Just a little? ;)

I encourage everyone to check out the trailer. Just go here http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/disney/tronlegacy/ and look at the "Teaser Trailer" not the "Concept Test" (although that one is pretty, neat, too).

What is scary for me to think is that 3 of the main actors in the movie were not even born when the original came out. I remember watching the original!!! Man, I am getting old......

The funny thing is, Tron is not really one of those movies you go back and watch again and again. It was unbelievably cutting-edge when it came out, but unlike Star Wars and Blade Runner, it became dated rather quickly and now is almost laughable to watch. But I still remember how fantastic it seemed when I saw it the first time as a kid. It's just hard to really communicate that excitement to somebody who watches it today for the first time. So I think the only people who will be as excited as me for Tron: Legacy are the ones who, like me, saw the original back in the early 1980s.

Apparently Tron: Legacy is one of the latest "most expensive movies ever made"s (although I have a hard time believing it cost more than Avatar).

I rarely go see movies when they just come out, but I may have to make an exception for this one.

Nobody??!!

Man, now I really do feel old.....

(Yes, I know one also has to classify oneself as a geek, too, but I am no longer in denial about that.)

No, it's not just you, Mofongo. I'm a big movie fan myself and I'm looking forward to this too.........., BUT I wasn't an absolutely rabid fan for the original. But that's probably just as well as I'm less likely to be disappointed! I'd hate to be in a situation where if Tron was The Empire Strikes Back (OK I'm stretching it massively for the sake of the analogy here!), and if Tron Legacy turns out to the Phantom Menace, then I'd be gutted if I was a huge Tron fan!

Yeah, I suppose it could turn out to be a flop...there are no guarantees except that I we hope that Disney knows not to screw up a movie with such a huge cult following and one that cost so much to make.

I have actually only ever watched the original TRON twice. As a movie, it was probably ahead of its time in that the special effects technology was just not quite there yet, so it ended up being a little hokey in execution. But the concept was just so innovative. There was just something about the light-cycles and the disks and everything in the digital world that, in the early 80s at least, really stretched your mind.

I have realized now that the reason I am so excited about the sequel is because I was actually pretty bummed that the original TRON movie had to suffer such poor execution when it was such fantastically innovative and richly conceived world. To see that world finally be given the special effects that it really deserves makes me hope that maybe we can see a movie that is just as good in execution as the original TRON was in concept.
