I'd say definitely go to Brick Lane (never been myself but hear it's good) for a curry and also try out Manze's pie and mash shop, which is just south of Tower Bridge.

Other than that, I echo the other advice. London is a big place with a lot to see and prepare to have people try and rip you off. The prices we natives pay are bad enough.

i was informed by a friend of a restaurant called ASK, he said it has pretty decent italian cuisine, i always wanted to go to ramsay's french restaurant but heard it is overrated and overpriced.....and i was told to confront scheming cab drivers by asking them......"how long did it take you to pass your knowledge?"

Oh, one more thing. If you're thinking about getting some 'nice' food one night, do not go to Le Gavroche.

I took my fiancee there and the meal (3 courses, 1 bottle of wine between us) came to £300. I've had nicer meals for a fraction of the price.

As for other things to do, the London Eye is good (especially for kids), and also, just walking around is under-rated. Make sure you get a good guide book and you can spend hours wandering around the little streets just looking at how old stuff is, it's mental.

ASK is a chain, so while it's nice enough you'd be better off with something a little more exclusive IMHO.

ASK is a very reasonable chain restaurant. Far better than the Crapplebee's, Chili's garbage chain restaurants we have over here. It's a good place to get lunch but if you told me you went to ASK for your nice meal out in London I'd probably laugh.

Have to say I completely disagree. Le Gavroche is one of my favourite restaurants in the world. OK, so some find it a little stuffy (jacket is required but they have some to hand if you've forgotten that) but compared to some of the restaurants in London that get a lot of attention (thinking of The Ivy here!) it is excellent. I've been a couple of times in the last month or so, was there a few weeks ago for lunch and they were doing three course fixed menu with half a bottle of wine for £48 per person. That's stunning value for money IMO. The seven course 'Menu Expcetionel' is an excellent dinner for £95 a head.

I did find it a bit on the stuffy side, but I knew about the jacket thing and kept mine on :)

My main gripe was that we had a 'normal' 3 course meal, 1 bottle of wine and that came to £300. Which is a lot. When I went there, the Menu Expcetionel was about £150 per head, I wish I'd had that instead! I've not been to any other 'high end' restaurants in London, and probably won't bother in the future.

Maybe they had to charge us £300 for the 85 staff they had on that night :)

just got back last night, i truly had a great time, visited all the major stuff, everything from Buckingham to abbey road, London is truly a magnificent place, chock full of more history than anyone can ever imagine.we saw jersey boys in the west end, Visited notting hill's portabello market, covent garden, leicster square, picadilly, i stayed at the renaissance chancery court in holborn, great hotel, and convenient to the underground. for a nice meal we decided on Sophie's in Covent garden, it was great. one thing is for sure about london, someone is always watching (cameras EVERYWHERE!), and it is quite an expensive city, but it was worth every dollar or pound spent, and i will be planning a return trip soon.

Glad you enjoyed it over here!

You're not wrong about the CCTV cameras - I read somewhere that the British are the most "watched" nation on Earth. If it actually cut crime, it'd just about be acceptable....... but somehow I don't think the stats would support that.

Anyway, really glad you had a good time. Did you make it to New Bond Street or is that one for next time? :D
