Superb pics Mark!

No matter how clever a camera might be, the guy holding it can make a big difference!

Well after all the advice.............

I ignored it and bought a FujiFilm F70 EXR

I got an awesome deal on it that made it about half the price of the likes of the G10 and in handling them it seemed like a lot more than half the camera.

I'm going to have to get used to not having a viewfinder, but the 10x optical zoom was a big plus and it can still focus close enough to be usable for my watch movement shots (and you can use the flash with macro). No uncompressed format, but the wider than normal dynamic range helps offset that.

Given that this is going to be a snapshot camera most of the time, I'm happy. I'm off on my next trip in a week's time so I guess I'll find out. I'm headed north so I am hoping to see the northern lights and share some pictures with you guys so you can decide for yourself how well the camera works!

So long as you're comfortable with it, that's all that counts!

Happy snapping!

Actually Sharky, your comment to Mark about the guy behind the camera making a lot of difference was a big part of my decision.

I understand most of the theory of how to get the best out of a camera, but I'm just not great at execution. This Fuji is smart enough to do things for me so that I can get as good a shot as my talent allows while still having some basic manual features if I am feeling daring. As my skills grow then this might not be enough for me, but with the rate of change in this market right now then I will be able to upgrade to something that just isn't available yet.

In the meantime I can take some decent pictures. I've been playing with it a bit today and it seems great. I can't get the PC software to work properly, but it's only aviewer so no big deal.

Here's one of my first attempts - I've cropped and compressed it in PhotoShop, but it's otherwise untouched - not bad in my opinion.
