I'm just about to buy my first mechanical watch. It will be a used one in good condition since I can't afford a new one in the class I want.

I was mostly looking for a Omega Seamaster, much because of the affordable price, but I always liked Breitling, especially navitimer and chronomat, a little more but didn't really consider them because of the prices.

However, today I saw a 2002 Shadow flyback for reasonable money for sale, below half price and in good conition. Does anyone have any info about it?
Since it was only made for two years, did they have problems with it or something?

I read a little on the info page about the watch here, and the flyback sounds like some part of the mechanism, is it so?

Is it noticeably smaller than a Chronomat?

Does anyone have a good picture of one with blue dial? The sellers picture was too bad to tell much. (I'm not even sure the dial is really blue or just a reflex )

Hello and welcome aboard.

The Shadow Flyback is a nice classic Breitling piece. There were no problems with it as far I am aware, but for some reason it wasn't continued for very long.

It's not very big, especially by today's standards - it's only 38mm across, while the current model Chronomat is nearly 44mm.

The flyback part is indeed part of the movement. It basically means that when the chronograph is running, most chronographs require you to press the top pushpiece to stop it before pressing the lower rest pushpiece if you which to start timing again. The flyback mechanism allows you to restart it without pressing the top pushpiece first. It's a fairly minor complication in the grand scheme of things, but it's still a nice thing to have.

Well that seems like a very small difference/improvement? Is it mostly the same as the chronomat otherwise?

Anyone who has any clue to why it was discontinued? Too similar to the usual Chronomat perhaps?

I love the Shadow Flyback - it's a really underappreciated piece in my opinion - classic Breitling.
