"In 2002, the group's chairman, Nicolas G. Hayek, announced that ETA would gradually phase out its supply of ébauches to outside companies by 2010; from 2011 on, it would sell only finished movements." So, ETA will still deliver ébauches throughout 2010 and finish delivering them in 2011? V. |

V. 2010 is the last year to buy ebauches - whether that's December 31st I have no idea, whether they'll have 'left over' stock in 2011, I doubt it because they'll just assemble them. |

I think the "reason" behing Swatch stopping the sale to other companies was done slyly. To foster new innovation? That is what "complications" are isn't it? I'm new to this, but a complication is something that the purchasing company adds to the base movement supplied to them right? While producing your own would be better in the long run for any company, no dependence on a supplier. I think they had the other reason for doing it, to thin out the playing field. Produce your own or go under. |

Personally as a watch fanatic, the Swatch Group is my new best friend as their action over ETA movements has forced innovation upon many of the middle to upper end watch brands. The lower ends brands will just chuck bog standard ETA's in their cases, but any brand with a modicum of aspiration will have to start making their own. Hopefully that'll mean a few more manufacturers throwing out the rule book and making movements that are a little more interesting. |
