If you wear the watch daily, you shouldnt need to hand wind at all. 40 or so turns is a full wind. You cant overwind it though, so it doesnt really matter how many turns you give it.

It may not have been fully wound when you began. Wearing it will basically maintain the charge that it has. So if its fully charged, wearing it every day will keep it fully charged (or very close).

Remember that you can't overwind an automatic. The 'standard' advice is 30 turns for every 24 hours of inactivity, but that's likely excessive. My manuals are generally somewhere between 15 and 20 winds to a full charge, and the automatics will likely be similar (although harder to tell with an automatic's slip clutch).
