Post subject:  Superquartz or Selfwinding mechanical?
Hi all, This is my first post and I have just joined. I love the site I find the discussion really interesting. I am trying to decide on which type of Breitling to go for a Quartz or Mechanical; I would just like to know which is the more reliable and least problems. I know the mechanical doesn’t keep time as well as the quartz reading on some post has anyone had any major problems with them, same goes for the quartz watch.

Also has anyone purchased a Chrono Colt and how have they felt regarding the watch has it been a good watch within time keeping and have you had any issues. Thanks

SuperQuartz is clearly more reliable on a day to day basis although if you do have a problem beyond a flat battery you are likely to have to replace all of the 'innards' as opposed to a service / replacement of worn out parts on a mechanical watch. My guess is that cost of ownership is probably less on a SuperQuartz for most people.

However, to me that kind of isn't the point. I could buy a $10 WalMart special that would probably be more accurate than a mechanical chronometer, but an automatic / mechanical watch is more a celebration of human achievement - sorry if that sounds corny, I just admire them for much more than the time they show - and most people on here will agree.

If that isn't important to you, then you are probably better with a SuperQuartz. I don't have experience with the specific models that you are considering so can't help there, sorry.

roffensian is right! just to keep time buy a timex cheapie! mechanical watches are a piece of jewelry, history; also..splurge !

Breitling's SuperQuartz watches are accurate to 10 seconds a year! So if you want accurancy, go that way :)

SuperQuartz is very accurate but to me has no appeal, I enjoy knowing that there is a well engineered engine on my wrist, Breitlings are great that way, Sometimes when I am still for a while and then reach for something and go back to stationary mode I can actually feel the vibrations, shakes my wrist a bit even :shock: :D

Actually, I know what you mean. I don't experince that with my Breitlings, but I have other watches that do behave like that.

I agree with everything that has been said above.

Choose a mechanical watch if you want something with (dare I say) a soul and passion. Choose a Superquartz if you want robotic super accuracy.

Mechancial watches hold a more esoteric appeal than quartz, so if you plan to "get into watches" then mechanical is the way to go. If you just want something to tell the time accurately from now till doomsday (barring battery changes of course!) then buy a Superquartz.

From a personal perspective, with the exception of wanting an Airwolf, I would always prefer a mechanical watch.

I also agree which is why my first Breitling was mechanical. For my next purchase though, I really love the look of the Aerospace. The only thing that has stopped me is that it is quartz. I will still probably buy it though since it is my favorite look.

Thanks very much for your views on this guys it has been really helpful, you all have good points. One thing is for sure I won't be buying a cheapie, i do look at a watch being a piece of jewellery which can last for years.

I would have to go with an automatic watch. There are some super accurate quartz watches, but I think that mechanical watches are just a work of art.

Mechanical for me too. I was going to buy an Airwolf (which I still love the look of) but opted for the Automatic Chrono Avenger which I love. Being a Mechanical Engineer I have a passion and great respect for all things mechanical engineered to exacting standards. If I'm flush one month I may get the Airwolf too as it is a fantastic looking watch.

It all depends on what you expect from a watch and what you want it you do really.

A mechanical watch is a work of art. It is finely crafted and, with a display back, beautiful to look at and admire. It is capable of keeping time reasonably accurately and can have many useful complications such as alarm, second time zone, stopwatch etc.

A quartz watch is an electronic marvel, though still mechanical to a large degree, (it relies on the physical vibrations of the quartz crystal tuning fork inside it for its operation in much the same way a 'mechanical' watch relies upon the oscillations of its escapement). A quartz watch will always be more accurate over a longer period and can provide complications that are simply impossible with a mechanical watch.

That's why I have, and love, both types. :)
