Post subject:  Purchasing advise: Sales Tax?

If I buy a watch outside my residential state, do I avoid the sales tax? Furthermore, is there a luxury tax on Breitlings? I noticed some online sites such as authenticwatches.com have good prices, with no sales tax and no shipping fee. Is this a legitimate site? Has anyone purchased a watch from them?

P.S. Thank you for the advise on my previous post.

In my limited experience (2 watches and several rings bought out of state), you do not have to pay sales tax on watches or any jewelry if the seller does not have a registered business in your state of residence. An important thing to remember is that this not only applies to mail order items, but also items that you purchase in person provided you can prove that you reside out of state. Not every seller will waive the sales tax on an in-person sale if you live out of state, but in my experience most jewelers are very savvy about sales tax regulations and will happily do everything they (legally) can to save you from paying sales tax.

Where it can get dicey is if you by a watch from a jeweler who is out of state and has stores in your home state. Then, you are technically obligated to pay your home state's sales tax rate, even if it is higher than the state in which you conduct the purchase.

You won't have to pay sales tax if you have it shipped out of the state it was purchased in.

Jeff, I've purchased all of my watches out of state and have never paid any sales tax. Most of the time the AD has paid for shipping.

Keep in mind that if you buy from authenticwatches.com, this is not an authorized Breitling dealer and therefore you will not get the Breitling 2 year warranty. You will get authenticwatches.com in-house warranty. This means that you have to send it back to them for any service issues should they arise and let them work on your very expensive Breitling watch......a HUGE thing to consider

There are tons of reviews and stories about that site and others like it. If you do some research you can see that sometimes the back page of the warranty book isn't even there... :?
