Hello all, I am new to this forum, and am in the midst of purchasing my first watch. I am in the market for a new (will accept display model) Breitling Chronomat Evo, with a brown croco strap. I have went to a few dealers in my Area (Philly), and the best quote I have recieved is $3775.00, tax included, and the MSRP was $4450.00 . I realize this is only about 15% under retail. With that being said, it seems the dealer will negotiate. The question is, how much should I offer, or should i claim I got a better quote? In reading the board, I saw that some would be offered 30 to even 50% off retail on a standard Breitling. Also, I want to purchase a rubber strap for it also. Should I ask to throw this into the deal? I am also not going to finance the watch, but pay in full with a credit card (got to love getting rewards points). Further, I think now is a great time to buy because the market is terrible, and buying luxury items such as watches is at a low. Any tips? This is my first big watch purchase, and this board seems like a great place to get input. Thanks in advance! PS: I know its all personal preference, and I'm leaning towards a black face, but also like the white. I'm using it as an everyday watch, in a business casual / wall street environment. Thanks |

There's no way you're going to get 50% off, but you should be able to manage more than what you said you got. Since you're in Philly, I sent you the name of my AD, Govberg, which I'm sure you visited but I made to give you the name of the sales person I always deal with. I also sent you a PM with the contact info and a little tip to tell George when you call him. |

I think if you were willing to make a cash offer and not pay with credit card, the dealer might have some more room to work with. The merchant fees for the credit card transaction sorta kills whatever margin they would have left to play with. |

True. I've been told the AD get's the pieces for about 43% off of retail. There is some room for play there

Just remember, the ADs need to make money as well. You have an excellent AD in the city you live in who'll give you an excellent quote. |

Let's just suppose that it is 43%. I'm not going to comment on the accuracy of that number, so don't take this as an endorsement of it. In fact different ADs have different degrees of buying power so the % varies. But just for argument, let's say it is, so the store pays 57% of retail. And let's suppose that you are offered 30% - a reasonable number that allows for the official allowable discount and the 'turn a blind eye' number, so you pay 70% of retail. That leaves 13% difference between cost price and sale price. Now that 13% has to cover: - Dealer financing costs (they pay before they sell unless it's an order) - Dealer fixed costs - rent, utilities, property taxes, insurance, equipment, etc - Corporate costs - functions like HR, finance, IT, etc - Staff salaries - Staff commissions - Transaction costs - bank and credit card fees - Profit Just how much 'wiggle room' do you expect??? |

When i bought my Chronomat Evo from my dealer The MSRP on it was $5840 Canadian. The best i could do was 30% Off. If i where you i would try to push for little bit more on it.. good luck, |

30% seems to be fair middle ground. Customer leaves happy with great deal and AD has room for profit with overhead. I am a parts manager with Nissan. I am willing to sell at cost + 15% in today's market. Hate to think if auto is this cut throat what % AD's for watches are willing to go. |

The comment wasn't intended to imply a huge number. Just the fact that he mentioned he was offered 15%. There is a LARGE amount of wiggle room between 15% and say 35%. I would be happy with 30 % ish. Still pretty far off from 15. |

50% off if you buy second hand ( I usually do; gotta love those savings). And I always pay cash; cause at the end, with all the financing charges, you wind up paying a lot more $$$; the 30% discount, depending how fast you pay it off, will be much less in the end..... Maybe you can drive up to Ontario and get the customary 30% off + no provincial sales tax + 30% exchange rate..... the savings are ENORMOUS lets see 5840 Can$-30% = 4088Can$ ~2700 U$ |
