Age for owning a watch, more specifically, a Breitling

Hey, I really want to get a Breitling watch. Iv'e been looking at the Blackbird (the newest version), the chrono superocean, super avenger, and i think it was the chrono avenger. But the thing is, I'm only 14.... People think im crazy, seriously, but im really interested in watches. I've been looking at other brands, Longines, Tag Heuer...... but then i came upon Breitling and i fell in love, the thing was, it's actually pretty expensive compared to some other luxury watch brands. BUT, i have been saving up and am looking to try to make some money somehow. But my question was, do you think its outrageous for me, a 14 year old boy in middle school, to be buying a watch that costs upwards of $4000? If you do think it's outrageous, then what age do you think is more appropriate?

well yeah you are young....but i pretty much can guarantee that you will have the best watch in school!!!! you know what if you have the money and you really like it get it!!!! we live for these things...get what you want and you will be happy...because remember we dont live forever.

I dont think you are too young. If you want one, get one. I would also say that wearing it to school is probably not in your best interest. You may be putting yourself and your watch at risk for being damaged/robbed/stolen/alienated etc. Just my opinion...

I certainly liked good watches when I was 14, I just didn't have the means to get one.

yeah....theyre right!!!!! it could mean trouble...but if you own a breitling that means your tough so just pound theyre faces in if they try anything lol...no im just joking!!!!!!!

If your parents will put up the cash for a nice time piece like a Breitling you are a lucky kid. If you are willing to work for it and earn it, then it will be all the more valuable to you. I think it is cool that you are interested owning a nice watch at such a young age, but part of me thinks you should be more worried about hooking up with the hottest girl in school or IPods and Face book?

My choice would be the Blackbird......... :lingsrock:

you cant go wrong with a breitling!!!!! theyre all kick ass!!!!! and well in my opinion some of the prettiest watches in the world!!!!!!

Probably not the best watch to wear TO school. Just get it and wear it on special occasions etc. Congrats on being able to get one at 14 though

This is actually an interesting question. I was obsessed with a tag heur my father owned for years. I just loved the watch. It wasn't the brand that I liked, but I just loved the look of the watch. At 13 I wasn't as materialistic as I am now (unfortunately) and I didn't know stuff about brands, etc. Things were different just 10 years ago. The internet and mass media weren't the same. That being said, We don't neccessarily love breitlings because of the status symbols that they have become because of the price, but because they are simply beautiful machines and we love the way they look. Of course, in this world the higher quality something is/ desireable/ superior to other alternatives then this object is often times more expensive. That being said, I was so happy to get that watch my father gave me on my 13 birthday. I still have it, and while it doesn't get worn much as I prefer wearing my breitlings, the watch has never been "serviced" except to change a battery. It is still keeping perfect time and it still looks good. I still get complements on it from people. I think that for a 13 year old to have a breitling is something that you, as the 13 year old owner may regret. You are better off taking that money and putting it in the bank/make investments/ and buy it when you are older. I would say treat yourself to it when you hit a milestone. I bought my first breitling for myself when I graduated from college. I bought my second for myself for my 23rd birthday. If you buy it at 13 you won't be able to properly enjoy it. You can't wear that at school. It is innapropriate and simply stupid. You could be killed in a lot of places for that watch... that is if someone 13 years old can appreciate it. Hell, I bet some teachers might even swipe that thing from you. My last point is that it is human nature to always improve, never to be satisfied with what you have and to always do better. This is true when it comes to watches. I got a chrono superocean and loved it. I saw a SA and instantly I forgot about the CSO and wanted a SA. Now that I have one, I'm thinking about getting the bentley motors. I do however really love both watches and variety is key. However, you get a breitling when you are 13.... when you reach 25 what are you going to buy yourself???

Well, I am 60 now, and I remember all the things I wanted at your age! In the early 60s, I spent almost $100. on a new Pierre Cardin sports coat. I later worked at that store while going through school. In those days, that was a lot of money for a coat!
If this kind of a watch is important to you, then I would say go for it! You are obviously not getting it to show off, or you would not be concerned as much about what others think. If you have a passion for this type of thing, that's great!
I can think of lots of other things that you could be spending the money on, and I am very thankful that you are not!
I think this forum is wonderful, and that there are people from all age groups on here, and I am very encouraged that you have done the research and taken the time to research the watch you will buy.

After reading the previous post I have to say while I stand by my first post, I also think that if you can get one at that young of an age and you really want it, then I say do it! If you take care of it, the watch will last you a lifetime. Also, if you don't like it, you can always sell it to a member of the forum!

Well I bought this one at 15, and my second Breitling at 50. Breitlings back then were nowhere near as expensive, as Breitling did not have high profile, global branding like now. A lot more of your money paid for the watch rather than the marketing.

Have you thought about maybe a secondhand Breitling? They can be like new with a service for a fraction of the cost of a new one. Some real beuties out there to be worn :wink:

It's very good that, at 14, you are able to have the patience to save up for a nice watch, but I have to agree with the others about wearing it to school. It's a shame that I'm saying it too, but someone will probably take offence to you wearing it and/or try and nick it. That's how (in my mind) things are today.

You sound sensible though so I'm sure you'll make the right choice for you.
