Hi everyone! Been a little while since i've been on here but glad to see everyone still has the Breitling Bug despite the "economic slowdown".. Some changes on my part because of this but I'm not going to bore anyone to death with the stories! ![]() Okay, so this is what im wondering... Just moved house and somehow my bakelite box got some abuse. The lettering has fallen off! ![]() Has this ever happened to anyone else? Also can anyone recommend a suitable adhesive to re-attach this vital part of the bakelite box? Comments/suggestions very welcome as I want to have it back to normal ASAP. Thanks everyone! PS - Nice gong with the new site admin, looks good!! ![]() |

PS - Nice gong with the new site admin, looks good!! ![]() Good to see you back! That wasn't the problem I was expecting - I was expecting chipped bakelite as it is so brittle. Not sure what material the lettering is made of but I have always been told that regular 'crazy glue' works well on bakelite (though don't have personal experience). |

This happened to me as well. I just used a small amount of glue to reattach the letter. No idea how it happened so easily. I never touched the box! |

Good to be back!! ![]() Is regular super-glue ok to use? My fear is that it might be corrosive to the bakelite. Roff: never heard of "crazyglue" but i'm assuming it's regular glue of some-sort. The letters are i think brass, which are (were!) recessed into the box lid itself. Thanks for the quick responses! ![]() |

Thanks for the quick responses! ![]() Crazy Glue is just a regular clear glue - I think superglue is just a stronger version of the same sort of stuff. I know a guy who is into old radios and he uses superglue on some of the larger cracks in bakelite (crazy glue is his usual one with superglue when he needs more strength) so you should be OK. |

Crazy Glue is a brand name, as is Super Glue. All are forms of cyanoacrylate, the super fast drying glue that is used alot in scale modelling and even surgery to close up incisions. Usually comes in a small tube that dries up after you use it once ![]() |

You should be alright to use a cyano-acrylate glue on bakelite, but if you really want to make sure you can just try to add a drop to the box somewhere where you won't see it afterwards. |
