As the title suggests?? Is it rubber, pvd steel? Does it scratch?

The 49mm Chrono Matic: It is hardish rubber, I think you could gouge a piece out if you tried, it is pretty tough. If you press your finger nail to it the rubber gives, not slick, matt. It has a low slip coeficent. Spelling? Hope this helps, Mine is in the gallery section, there are a couple close ups.

I thought it was rubber coated steel, I'm sure I read that somewhere.

The underlying part is steel, but the rubber is pretty thick. I think it's more of a rubber bezel bonded to a thin steel base than rubber coated steel (i.e. thick rubber on thin steel, as opposed to thin rubber on thick steel), if that makes sense.

I always assumed it was made of the same kind of rubber as car tyres...... which would make it pretty darn tough.

I agree with Driver, it is very similar to car tire material.
