I just pulled the trigger on the new MySQL GridContainer Upgrade. The databases are being moved as we speak, and the entire process should be transparent to us. Please let me know if anything weird happens, like missings posts or anything. They promised it would be totally transparent, but you know how those things go sometimes :)

Hope you guys enjoy it! Thank you for the donations, they helped expedite the new changes to the system!

Yeah I had one posting die on me (short fortunately), but I did get a friendly error message asking me to wait a minute - of course then it went to the usual critical error!

Well, looks like the new DB is completely up. This is a completely protected DB environment now, so no shared environment to slow down the DB. If there are problems, I can manually reboot it, etc. as well as rebuild and repair tables. This should improve overall performance. Hopefully it lives up to its hype!

Not the DB upgrade.. this is a totally backend upgrade and is meant to improve the speed of the forum and the rest of the database driven portions of the site... given the forum is 95% of load, its mostly for the benefit of the forum :)

When I roll out the Forum upgrade, the look WILL change.. not dramatically, but slightly.

If you want to get a feel of how the new forum will look (if i go with phpBB3, which looks like it might be the case), check out the Paneraisource forums. It will look more or less like that, but of course with our characteristic black and yellow colors :)

Sorry to be a dick, but why not vBulletin? Much greater forum!

Wrong thread for the forum software discussion. Lets keep these threads organized! :) I want to be able to reference these for information. I deleted a couple posts regarding opinions about forum software.. please post those in the forum discussion sticky!

NOTE: I'm not mad or anything! I just need to make this decision soon and I really want you guys to tell me if you have a preference or whatever so I can do this on the weekend!

Be glad you never got to experience the horror!

Before October 2008, this forum used to have problems all the time until I moved it to a new hosting company. Now its blazing fast, and dare I say it, even faster with the new grid container upgrade.

Part of the reason for the upgrade is also because about 5-6 days ago, there was another outage and problem because the shared mysql somehow got mucked up again, and I'm sick of it. The gridcontainer gives us an isolated database with our own memory and I can reboot the database when I want to if there is ever a problem. No more sharing!
