Post subject:  I'm warming up to the Aviator 8...
Never saw this coming, but the fact is, I'm really liking the latest iteration of the Aviator 8. After a bit of evolution, I think this piece has finally found its stride. The anthracite dial version is very nice...

I think this is a solid watch that now stands on its own merits. I like the general nod to the 765 AVI in terms of the numerals on the bezel (instead of just a single pointer), as well as the treatment of the minutes subdial. The touch of red on the chrono seconds hand offers a nice accent. I really think this one has come into its own, and, I must admit, I am very tempted...

I remember when I first saw this dial introduced at Basel and I thought if there was one dial in the Aviator lineup that I like, it has to be this one. I’ve always been a big fan of the anthracite dials and it’s one reason I’m still thinking about the Premier. The picture below is the one Fred posted from Basel and I think this dial really looks great.

This is one range that I've still not overly warmed to unfortunately (except for the Curtiss Warhawk version), but the simple action of changing the name from Navitimer 8 to Aviator 8 was a very good move IMO. It now has more of an identity of it's own, and the fact that I DO quite like the Curtiss Warhawk shows me that the Aviator range is moving in the right direction.

The name change did make me look at this watch differently as weird as that sounds. I started looking at it independently rather than focusing on why it in my eyes does not look like a navitimer. And it does look nice standing on its own. I think it looks better in person and while it's not on my list of must have watches I do like the anthracite one shown above.

there are many small changes on the bezel, dial & hands that add to the "character" it now has, agree that the new (originally sadly rejected) name is an important step

Me thinks all of those small changes are in the good direction, be it the "B" on the central seconds counter or the 6 small lines on the minute counter. I'd have 1-2 similarly small further ideas for those small improvements :) anyway, a beautiful model family.

I have seen and handled the Curtiss Warhawk version and really liked it with that splash of red on the dial, although the odd lug width (23mm) was not favorable for me :( . Have some nice 22mm straps that would go great with the green dial.

Also the Ocean Classic mesh would make a great companion if made in 23 mm - but it isn't AFAIK.
