Post subject:  huge service bill - need advice....

hey ppl - I am new to the forum - and love my Breitling Superocean Chronograph II and prefer wearing it over some of my other babies. I noticed my watch losing time so I gave it in for service. They have come back with an estimate of $950.0 which seems excessive.
This is the explanation they gave: Your watch readings on analysis has shown very low amplitude and an erratic rate. It is working but there is no guarantee of time accuracy and there is no power reserve. Hence a complete overhaul is necessary.

What are your views.....

Not sure where you are located but in the US Breitling service will send you a copy of the estimate with a listing of the work that is required, and work that is optional. I am not sure what current pricing is so I can not comment on the quote that was given but it sounds as if it has some optional items included. I believe that your watch is a not an in-house movement so it would be possible to have it serviced at an independent watchmaker who has access to parts. If it was an in house movement than you would be stuck, Breitling does not sell parts to service its in-house movements to independent watchmakers. Good Luck!

The going price for a mechanical chronograph (non in-house movement) complete overhaul is listed as $690. This doesn't include additional parts that need replacement other than a set of hands (included in price). Sounds like they are replacing some additional parts from your quote, low power reserve, probably new main spring, etc.

Should be able to get the itemized details of the quote.

i guess that's an in-house movement rather than a Valjoux

the manufacturer can pretty much charge whatever they would like for an in-house movement, where as a Valjoux you can get it serviced at a good 3rd party watch specialists at a cheaper price

for anyone invests in a watch that's worth thousands of dollars, be prepared to spend quite a bit on the servicing once every 2-3 years if it is pretty much running on daily basis

but if you aren't prepared to spend that kind of money, probably get something like a Seiko
The Seiko Sportura Kinetic I bought 11 years ago using the money I earned from part time job as a university student still running strong without servicing and battery change, still my go to watch for weekend activities
