Post subject:  serial number not in the system??

Hey everyone,

I’m new to the board and I just purchased my first Breitling Steelfish X-Plus from authenticwatches.com
I was reading on this board about getting a COSC certificate, so I called Breitling USA in CT and asked about it. They stated that I could go to any AD and they can order it for me. I called Wempe in NYC, who stated that they don’t do that unless the watch was purchased from them. So I did a conference call with Breitling and Wempe. During the conference call I was asked by Breitling for the serial number for my watch… she stated that that serial number was not in her system and that the watch was either not authentic or purchased outside the United States. So, can I still get a COSC?

First off welcome to the forums.

What did Breitling USA recommend you do? I'm sure they recommended something. Though there are some very knowledgeable members here and even a few people working for AD's, ultimately BUSA would be the authority.

Thanks for responding in2Deep, actually I was a little stunned, so I said thanks and hung up the phone. Guess I can call back tomorrow and ask.

Yes, you should definitely call them back.

Quick question, is returning the watch an option? What is their return policy?

This sounds very strange to me. A mate of mine here in the UK bought a Chronomat from Jomashop in the US, and that arrived without a COSC certificate. He phoned BUK about the certificate and they said that if he sent the watch in to them they would confirm authenticity and for around £30 they'd order a new COSC certificate, which is exactly what they did.

Oh and that watch originally came from an AD in Moldova  , and even though it'd gone to the States and then to the UK, BUK had no problem at all confirming authenticity and ordering a COSC cert.

Sounds to me like BUSA are being very difficult for some reason. :?

I don't doubt that it's a non US watch, Eastern Europe and the Far East are the usual sources for grey market dealers. Like Driver8 says, it sounds like BUSA just have a policy of not arranging for reissue unless it was an original US sale.

COSC certificates will only be issued by the COSC to Breitling SA, so anyone, anywhere can do it. It might be worth getting in touch with BReitling SA customer service directly and telling them that you have a non US sourced watch and that you are in the US with BUSA not wanting to help.

At the risk of stating the obvious, don't mention that it's grey market.

i never knew BUSA can just flatly say the watch is not in "their system" just because it might have originated from outside the states. being a small branch of the large breitling umbrella, isn't it BUSA duty to assist any breitling owner if the watch is authentic? what if i'd lost my COSC cert for a watch i'd bought from a bahamas AD?

Thanks everyone for responding. I did try to contact BUSA today but got message stating that they are closed for the holiday season, and will reopen Jan 2, 2009. I’ll keep you updated.

Merry Christmas, and have a happy and safe New Year!
