I am the thrilled owner of a new cockpit.I am looking at buying a winder because my job as a firefighter means my watch is best left at home while I am working.While I am researching winders I am winding it manually.The manual tells me to wind it 40 times.How are you meant to count 40 revolutions of the crown?I wound it to what I thought may have been appprox 40 turns and it seemed to feel different.When the clutch engages should it sound or feel different or am I feeling something that doesn't exist.I am worried about damaging my watch.Any advice would be appreciated. I am sorry I haven't posted a picture but I can't figure out how to.

What your probally sensing is the tightness of the mainspring when its fully wound. All modern automatics have a clutch in them so you cant overwind it. Forty, clockwise turns and its fully wound and will stay running for 42 hours or more.

Ive never noticed any difference in tension...I just wind it until I count about 40 turns or until ive forgotten how many turns its been and my fingers are tired..

Neither have I on automatics.

Manual winds are a different story as you certainly do notice the difference in tension as it becomes fully wound. And that's where you stop as manual winds do not have a clutch mechanism!

There definitely is an increase in resistance with a fully wound mainspring, but the clutch function means that it's very slight - nothing like the resistance that you feel with a manual wind.

In terms of 40 turns, it's generally considered to be 40 winding motions, though I have to say with my manual winds I usually find that 15 - 20 results in a full wind for a 24 hour period.

Congratulations noeldownunder on the Cockpit! When I first saw pics of the new design for the Cockpit I preferred the old design, but after seeing some pics of it being worn I completely changed my mind. Now, I wouldn't hesitate of picking the new one over the old one.

For winding, you already have plenty of good answers, and I think you're absolutely right not to wear it while fighting fires. Wear it in health the outside work though!
