Post subject:  Credit Crunch = cheap watches?

I am looking into buying a Breitling Navitimer from [insert well known high street store here].

I was wondering if anyone on here knows what kind of discounts are currently being offered in %age, or better still what the typical mark up is on Breitlings.

Given it is a buyers market and shops are struggling, this must be a good time to make a silly offer of cash and hopefully have it accepted?

Cheers!!

Thanks - was meaning UK/USA etc.

Don't expect the same degree of discount in the UK as in the US/middle east. For years, 10% was generous and 15% reserved only for those buying their third or fourth of the year!

I do think things are changing though. The lack of spending power on the High St means if you are thinking of splashing out £3k, shops will fight over you. That said, if you try and get a discount on a Rolex or Patek, I doubt if you'll succeed and demand still outweighs supply.

If you are looking at the Navitimer, Chronomat, or Super Avenger (unconfirmed but I suspect the 3 most popular Breitling models) then I doubt you'll get much more discount than usual. If, however, you're looking at an older, less popular model which the AD has is stock (eg B-2) you may be able to get a significantly better deal.

Mark up on watches is usually about 50% so PoR is about 33%. The shop has to pay vat, rent, rates, wages, finance stock and generate a profit so don't expect 50%+ discount!

Tips:
1. Do your homework. Know what models they have in stock, the list prices, what you'd like to pay and what you're willing to pay.
2. Have cash in the wallet to put on the counter.
3. In the same way shops make "never to be repeated" offers, you make a take it or leave it offer to the manager/salesperson.
4. There's always another day/another shop/another watch.

H Samuels were advertising "Buy a watch - get a second half price". Don't know if this applied to every watch they sell but is a broad indication that 25% could be the limit of deal achievable.

Good luck with the hunt!

Thanks Sharkmouth

I was definitely going to go into the shops with cold hard cash, rather than a visa card - having the cash on you makes it look as though you have withdrawn it for a purpose, to spend that day. Hopefully that will enable me to drive a harder bargain!

My local stockist have already mentioned that they will beat Watches of Switzerland so that is promising, although it still begs the question - how do I prove that one store has offered a watch at a certain price, will they call the other shop?

On another note, what are the potential savings to be had in the States? I know a few people who live out there, or if the savings permit, I could always use them to fund a whistlestop trip to NY?

Thanks

The current exchange rate with the dollar is pretty terrible so the times of good deals States-side are well and truly on hold for the moment. If I was you I'd use the cash you'd pay on the flight to go towards a UK piece.

I got my first Breitling at Mallorys of Bath and got 10% off with cash without any haggling required. My father just said he'd pay cash and was told it was customary for 10% off, this was 7yrs ago mind you but the watch was the only one in the UK like it at the time. Great people, nice store too!

Very true Driver8, I've been keeping an eye on the exchange rate and it seems things are not going to get better for a while. When I got my Navi World the exchange rate was $1.98/£1. Now barely is $1.50/£1.

depressing

Hi Again my Friends
If it helps, I negotiated a 20% discount on a Skyland and a Navi World with an AD in NW England. We're off Xmas shopping in Edinburgh at the weekend, if I do any better, I'll let you know. They seem quite keen 'to discuss a deal', from my telephone conversations anyway. It definitely appears to be a 'buyers market', for sure.

Good luck...............enjoy the challenge.........and the new 'Ling, of course.
