Post subject:  Getting your ling polished
Quick opinion question. My SA is looking pretty beat up (a lot of scratches, even some dings on the lugs) and I'm thinking of getting it polished by tourneau here in DC. They said it would cost around $200 to get it polished. What should I expect the polishing to do as I've never had it polished before? Will it round out some of the deeper dings, and get rid of the scratches? Should I just skip it and wait until I get the watch fully serviced down the line by breitling when they overhaul the watch and polish it, or is it worth it get it polished now. Will the polishing really improve the look of the watch that significantly?

Try polishing it with a cloth called The sunshine polishing cloth, you can get them from the Watchprince.com they are only a few dollars each and they do a great job of cleaning and polishing without being to agressive with the finish. The dings would be best taken care of when you have your watch serviced. IMHO...

When is the next service do?

$200 sounds expensive. There are competent places that can do it for much less.

The watch is a few years old. Supposed to service every 5 or so, but as long as it works well and keeps time well I'm not going to get it serviced until it starts to lose time, etc

just polished mine last night. I do it once a month approx. Looks incredible, you will be so surprised. I forget how luminescent the polished watch looks even after just a month of wear & tear. cheers

...Just polished my Skyland with Sunshine cloth. It removed minor hairline scratches from the ProII bracelet and gave the watch out-of-the-box new look again. I perform this operation every 20 days or so. The result is amazing. One pack (3 each) of Sunshine cloths cost me $10 at Amazon. Try it and if you are not satisfied, there is always much more expensive solution...

Ridiculous. Send a Breitling to BUSA for a "basic service" and it receives a basic polish and looks very nice when done. Pay an extra 75 bucks and they will put a "full" polish on the piece and it will look absolutely brand spanking new. A "full" polish is included when the piece undergoes a "full service". There are a couple of links available from the Breitling site describing a full service on the watch. What they don't show you is how they use the rouge sticks and polishing wheel to remove scratches, imperfections and dings you wouldn't think possible to remove. 200 bucks? Send it to me and Ill take it over to my Breitling authorized service center and have it full polished for you and I'll make about $ 125 profit. Give BUSA a call and ask for your area customer service rep and ask her the price for a full polish added to a basic service. Hope this helps...

PS. Tourneau is a Breitling authorized AD but not necessarily a Breitling authorized service center. Make the call to BUSA and then take the information to your AD and present it to him. :x

I agree with what's been said so far. If the scratches are hairline or very minor, then you can give it a bit of a polish yourself using Sunshine cloths or my own personal (if very vanilla-smelling!) favourite, Cape Cod cloths. I still swear by those guys!

Any deeper dings, then I agree with Ron that BUSA will have no problem removing them, for that (almost) factory finish.

From your advice I think I'm going to hold off on getting it polished for now until I need to send it into BUSA down the line to get fully serviced/polished. It doesn't seem worth it to pay for shipping to BUSA just for a basic service and I don't want to get it fully serviced for $600 right now when the watch is working perfectly.
