Dear all, I am thinking about the purchase of an avenger blackbird (or another Breitling - not sure yet) ... is the titan per se black or is there a coating that can/will be scratched over time? Comments very much appreciated ![]() Jay |

If you are not careful it will probably show marks of usage. Breitling claims it can be restored at service time. If you like the look go for it, otherwise, stick to 'naked' titanium Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

From regular wear, you will NOT show any blemishes. I've owed many BlackSteel pieces and have never had a problem with the coating wearing off. Now, banging into another hard object can damage the coating, but in my experience is a very rugged coatin and should not be a deciding factor for your purchase. I wish Breitling was more forthcoming regarding their black steel manufacturing process and achieved surface hardness ratings vs same untreated models, steel or Ti. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I quite like the idea of the coating wearing over tme to acquire a patination or 'brassing' akin to the wear on some of my old Leica cameras. Maybe the DLC coating is too hard for this to occur within a reasonable time frame. |

I was paranoid about my Blackbird BlackSteel, but the coating is tough. Frankly it shows much less swirls on the clasp than polished stainless would. I can barely see marks in reflected light on the buckle, but they do not cut into the black color. I am still careful with it but becoming more confident with the coating. Thank you for all the responses so far ... So I understood that Black titanium is ultimately a coating and NOT a colored version of titanium (with color throughout the material) ? ![]() |
