Hello all,

I've found a deal online that interests me, its a Breitling Superocean Steelfish X-Plus, blue dial, with the pro 2 bracelet. Box and papers included. Claims it was serviced in 2014. In a nutshell, I'm seriously considering it. I just have a couple of things that i need to know before i take the plunge. All help would be greatly appreciated.

1. I read that some models have the arrow-head seconds hand, and this one does have it, does it make it rarer, or more common?

2. i will be going to inspect it next week, what are the things i should look out for?

3. The seller has said he got the pro 2 bracelet, so how can i verify the serial number(wont the number on the back of the bracelet be different from the one on the papers)? Is the serial number on the caseback as well?

4. Considering a service was done in 2014, does it make the deal any better?

5. What are the key differences to note, so i know for certain that its the x-plus, and not just a regular superocean steelfish?

I read on this forum itself that the X-Plus was only made in 2006, as a transitional name, but he says he bought it brand new in 2009 for $5500(including the $900 pro 2 bracelet), anything to worry about?

He's asking for $2200 (i can get a brand new one for 5300) , which i find to be a bit steep. What would a fair price be(box & papers included, and serviced in 2014) ?

I've attached some pics for you guys to take a closer look.

Thanks in advance.

1. Whether it has an arrow seconds hand or a box seconds hand depends on the year the watch was made, idk if one is condidered rarer or more desirable, but i wouldn't place a high value on one or the other.

2. The one tell seems to be that even the best fakes wont have the right curve on the bottom of the S in Superocean on the dial, some people seem to be able to tell by looking at a good dial picture.

3. Idk

4. I would say so as cost of service could have been a few $100s depending on what was included in the service

5. The X-plus just means its from 2005-2006 and one of the first 44mm Superocean Steelfishs out there

6. It can be an X-plus that some watch dealer/Breitling Dealer had laying around in 2009, maybe as a trade with a customer, or it might just be a newer Superocean Steelfish

7. If it ends up being a real Superocean Steelfish, in good condition with a recent service and an extra bracelet, then i think the deal is more than fair

Do a search in other forums. Also look EBay and Chrono24. People here don't usually give valuations online.

Well i looked at Chrono24 and the Steelfish starts at over $1700 there, no extra bracelet, don't know if at that price they will have recent service

Just had a look in my 2006 chronolog & steelfish X-plus has the 'squared' seconds hand tip. The retail price in the U.K. was £1,505 on the ProII bracelet.
Now looking at my 2009 chronolog the 'steelfish' has the 'arrow' seconds hand tip. The retail price U.K. is now £1,965 on the ProII bracelet.
Cost of ProII bracelet 06 was £275 & in 09 had risen to £330. Both models weighed in at 122.50 gms.
Hope this may be of some use to you.
Cheers.

$2200 is a fair price for one that has been serviced and complete with box and papers. Was it serviced by Breitling or a local watchmaker?

There's not way he paid $5500 for it, last retail price for that model was maybe $2995 on the pro 2 bracelet. Just because it's called a Steelfish and now Breitling has the new Steelfish, the retail price isn't the same on both models.

Also the 2 models are very different, old steelfish is better all the way

Regarding question 3, there is no serial number on the bracelet, only on the back of the case.
The case back serial number should match with the serial number on the COSC certificate and on the warranty card.
The square dot second hand may have been updated with arrow tip one during service.

This is my Steelfish when it had just come back from a full service in 2014. I bought it in 2009 with two models in the showcase at my AD. The other model had the square second hand and a black face. I went to lunch with my wife, came back and it was sold so I bought this one. The pointed second hand is the newer version of this model of the Steelfish. When the service was done on the watch the hands need to be replaced and the current or last version is installed as opposed to what may have come on the watch when new. The service at BUSA was $500. - $550. as I remember. The price you are showing would be a goo deal if in fact the watch was serviced by an authorized service center. As far as rarity goes all of the Steelfish of this model run, if serviced by Breitling, will eventually have the pointed second hand. I do not see any benefit of one over the other as that is the only real difference in that model. There is a smaller version that predates mine but that is a different model number but I believe the same caliber. Hope this helps.
Frank.
