I fairly recently bought a Superocean 42. The place where I bought it did their own maintenance and inspection/testing of the unit before selling. It runs fine and everything looks great, but do you think I should send it in to Breitling for a 5 year service soon or should I wait for at least 3 years from the date of purchase.

Is there any cost advantage to sending the watch in for 'preventative' maintenance vs sending it in for repair? It seems like every maintenance/repair thread I have seen seams to average $700-800 anyway.

What would you experts do?

Was the seller a Breitling Authorised Distributor? If so, then you have nothing to worry about. If not, then they won't have had access the Breitling parts so their service isn't likely to be worth much.

As Nova said, a non-authorised dealers warranty isn't really worth much for the reasons he stated, so you have a couple of choices -

1. Depending on how old the watch is and whether the vendor actually did anything inside the case (repairs, service, etc), you could send it in to Breitling now and ask for a service. This will ensure that all parts are genuine Breitling, plus you will get a genuine 12 month Breitling warranty. But it will cost you AT LEAST a maintenance service. And obviously this won't prevent it needing another service in 5 or so years time.

2. The other option (assuming as you say it's all working fine and keeping good time) would be to wear it and enjoy it for a few years (again, how long is dependent on the age) and THEN send it in to Breitling for a service around the correct service interval time (i.e. 5 years or so). However, your bill could conceivably be greater at that point due to additional wear and tear, especially if the vendor has made repairs or serviced it with non-Breitling parts. Remember also that if something goes wrong in the next year you only have the vendor's warranty, which I personally wouldn't trust anyway as they won't be Breitling approved or have access to Breitling parts.

If it was mine (and this is just my personal opinion) and I was planning to keep the watch, then I'd be tempted to send it in for a maintenance service now. That way I'd be covered by the Breitling warranty and I'd feel certain my watch was "all Breitling". But obviously there is a cost and time implication for doing that.

I have pretty similar question, I just bought chronomat 44 in Duty Free from official dealer, the watch was build in 2013 and it was almost all time in the shop my five year warranty just started 15 April 2016, so the question is should I go to the service now or in a year from now, so far the watch behaviour is fantastic

No need to send your watch in unless you have any problems with it.
If you encounter problems in the next 5 year your watch would be covered by the Breitling warranty.

You need to get it tested for water resistance every two years under Breitling 5 year warranty else Breitling will not honour warranty for water damage.
Breitling do these tests for free during warranty.
I'd be tempted to get Breitling to do it seeing that it was build three years ago, especially if you plan to swim with it.
It won't hurt, will give you peace of mind and will not cost anything .

So the only thing that's voids your warranty is water damage if you don't send your B01 in for its two yearly maintenance service??

I'm curious about this because I have a Chronomat 44 B01 and it never gets submerged in water, so pointless going to the trouble sending the Watch in with my circumstances if this is correct, that's as long as it's covered for everything else of course for five years!

It would appear so but it is your watch hence it is best if you read it yourself and interpret it the way you read it.
The local service centre in my neck of the woods did it while I waited.

That's reads to me that you need to have the maintenance service to validate the full 5yr term of the warranty!

All Breitling in house movements have come with a five year warranty since 2012, part of that five year warranty requires that the watch be tested for water resistance at every two year mark. It takes about five minutes at an AD, (one that has a watchmaker on premise), there is no maintenance service involved. If you fail to have the water resistance checked then Breitling will not be responsible for any damage done as a result of water infiltration.
