Hello All, I bought my Breitling Navitimer 2nd hand from my friend who is a vintage watch dealer.... Anyhow..... with ebay - I have been able to reproduce the "NEW BUYER EXPERIENCE" ..... The AD in my home town showed me the range and gave me a Breitling catalogue..... I bought a lovely Breitling Cap from a german on fleabay...... I bought a lovely Yellow Breitling box from a frenchman on the flea..... and then I bought a Black Bakelite Breitling box from a Mexican..... Anyhow... surfice to say.... the Box was original... BUT THE rear metal clips had both cracked the back of the box..... (HE NEVER MENTIONED THIS AND STATED IT WAS PROBABLY DAMAGED IN SHIPPING!) Why does Breitling use this Bakelite junk? |

I have two different bakelite boxes. The one I received with my Wings Automatic is awful. The hinges broke, so I took it back to the AD for a replacement. The replacement box's hinges broke too. This one has some sort of 'felt' lining with an applied metal 'Breitling' logo inside. The other came with the the Navi Cosmonaute. This box is better quality: leather interior and proper hinges. |

Yeah, the older bakelite boxes had pretty weedy hinges which either pulled out, or cracked through the bakelite over time. The newer ones have much longer piano-hinges and the bakelite seems a little thicker to me. They seem much more hardy. Personally I really like the bakelite. As RJRJRJ said, it's a tradtion thing, and it makes a change from the more usual wood or leatherette style boxes. |

I like the bakelite too. Has a great nostalgic quality to it. |

The bakelite is a nice traditional touch, but as a material it is very susceptible to breakage, and as Driver8 says, the earlier ones had hinges that would break just by looking at them too intently. I tend to leave my broken ones as is, but I think super glue works quite well on bakelite. |
