| Post subject: | Depreciation of a used breitling |
I was just wondering, how much would a breitling that is 10 years old depreciate, or would it hold its value. Say, you bought a breitling that is 10 years old, and wanted to sell it in 10 years, how would it fair?And if there are any specific models that are more sought after then others. It's very hard to buy new ones and have them depreciate 40% as soon as you walk out the door  .

A 10 year old Breitling probably won't depreciate much at all (if anything) as the worst depreciation has already happened. Once you get past a certain point it will effectively become a vintage piece and as a Breitling (just like all other well known and "historic" brands) it will always have a value to collectors. In terms of being more "sought after", then classic Breitling pieces such as the Navtimer range will always be the safest bet. HOWEVER, to my mind, buying a watch for it's possible future value is NEVER a good reason for buying one. IMO you should always buy a watch because you like it, because I guarantee you would rather have a watch you love on your wrist as opposed to a watch you kind of like but that may (or may not) "hold it's value". If you buy a watch because you love it there's a good chance you will never want to sell it anyway, so the whole future-value-thing becomes irrelevent. |

Sold my 15 year old SuperOcean which cost £1250 new for £700. It needed a service, Bezel repair. And the strap was "worn". Mint they are going for around £1200. It does depend on the model I guess. Trying to predict what will still be popular and sought after in years to come could be difficult to predict. I put the money towards my new B50 - Currently in for repair (Ahem...) Agree with Driver 100%. In terms of holding value, generally it seems mechanical does better than quartz and classic lines (line Navi and Chronomat) do better than peripheral ones. |

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Mint one could go for as much as 1200£! That's pretty nice. Even 700£ for service, bezel and a worn strap is not too bad either. But then yeah, difficult to predict. I think it's unfair to expect everything in the world to hold its value over time, especially the ones you buy with so much passion and interest. A luxury car, for example, loses its value like crazy in just a few years. So, in my opinion, keeping the watches serviced regularly and in mint condition is the best bet whether you want to sell or keep them in your collection forever. peace
