Apologies if this is the wrong place on the forum for this!

I have several Breitlings and purchased one of the SA Military 24 hour models when they came out. My assumption being as a limited run the watch may appreciate in value over time.

As an exercise I've just been looking at prices from dealers (which like a car PX I know will always be lower than a private sale) however I've been stunned at the low ball offers I've received (around £1k in one instance).

I've never tried to sell a watch before so is this common? Is the best route always going to be a private sale and if so how the hell do I get an accurate value for that model?

Your watch is not going to increase in value, nor is it going to retain any more % of its value than any other Breitling. $ wise it may be worth more than a comparable non limited edition, but that's because it cost more new. FAQs recommend checking completed sales on eBay and dealer asking prices on Chrono24, you can also check the forums, some of these have changed hands already.

Watches, especially new watches (with very, very few exceptions) should never be bought with any expectation of value increase.

Not only your watch but pretty much anybody's watch.
Anything you buy will devalue dramatically in the matter of several days with the exception of some Rolex, Patek and some other special models.
All the best figuring out which one it is.
If we knew the answer, we most likely would not be sitting here right now but rather counting the Money and selling the winners to , well, newbies I guess.

As already said, watches will very seldom increase in value.

If you're selling to a dealer, in my experience they will offer about half of what they then will be offering the watch for. If you look at Chrono24 for example, you'll see a lot of dealer's sales and estimate to get half of that if you sell through that channel.

A private sale will always be better for you, and you can get an idea of the price level through Chrono24, ebay completed listings or sellling sections at forums.

Limited editions used to trigger a premium, but from what I see that starts to deteriorate. My opinion is that many brands, and especially Breitling, have released som many limited editions lately that they aren't limited anymore. Sure, the watch itself might be in a limited edition, but with so many different limited editions the exclusivity fades away.

If your watch could be expected to increase in value the dealer have kept it.

I bought a SuperOcean back in 1999 for £1250, and sold it recently for £700 due to the condition of the strap and clasp. If it was A1, I would probably got £1k......

If you keep them long enough they will go up. I bought a pre owned new bi metal chronomat evo for £1995 around 7 years ago from Mark Worthington Jewellers and I sold it for £2500 around 5 years later so you will get more if you buy them second hand at the right price and in the right condition. If you buy a brand new watch from an AD you will lose money straight away though. The evos seem to go for about £800 more now second hand than a second hand one went for about 7 years ago as they average £2600 to £2995 from sellers on ebay in the UK where they were around £1800 to £2000 for the same watch 7 years ago. I think the huge increase of the chronomat 44 put there prices up as not alot of people will pay £6500 for more or less the same watch other than the in house movement as the majority of people are not bothered about the in house movement its the Breitling name that interests them.

But those calculations need to factor in inflation.........

True, but inflation wont be that much over that time period.

Im often told that I should of bought a Rolex watch as stacks of people keep telling me that every single Rolex watch goes up in value but when I tell them that they dont they keep telling me that Im wrong. I personaly hate Rolex watches and think they look so bland and I would never personally buy a watch as an investment I would soley buy a watch because I loves the look of it which is why I buy Breitlings.

In short, no.

The demand for Rolex in secondary market is bigger and the discounts on most models are significantly less.

That said however Breitling does seem to be making a move to keep discounts down. Not sure how well the used market on Breitling is doing lately as I have not followed it much in the past 2 years.
