Hi there. I am wondering. I have a 2002 Crosswind and a 2014 Chronospace. If I look at the construction of these watches I honestly think they will last forever. As long as you service them every 5 years or so. What is the oldest Breitling watched that still keep good time ? 20years? 40 Years ? 60 ? I would love to pass these watches onto my Sons. Is this realistic ?

Breitling for me, all the way.

They're mechanical, with maintenance and very occasional case / dial restoration they'll last forever. My oldest (non Breitling) is about 150 years old and still in perfect working order.

my oldest is 80+, many are in the early 70s, all running strong, all keeping excellent time.

but any "quality watch" will keep (almost) forever if properly serviced.

. Wow Roff. That makes me happy. It's a lifetime investment that I can hand down to my Son. I really like that !!

I have a Navi from 66 but my oldest watch is this one.....and it's been in my family since issued :-)

The South East Asian Nation of Myanmar, (also known as BURMA), was seized by the Japanese in 1942 during World War Two. The British resistance, came via the :- 2nd & 5th Royal Tank Regiments.

Commanding one of those tanks was my late, great uncle. He was posted there for most of the conflict until being called back to Britain for a week. In that week his tank fell foul of a grenade attack and the replacement commander and one of the crew were killed, losing one of his best friends in the process.

After the war he came home and became Headteacher of a grammar school.

7 years ago he died. My father was very close to him ( and as a boy would beg to hear his stories, but The man wouldn't ever talk about it). When he was ill in 2003/04 and on my fathers last visit, he gave him a box to look through. Telling him this was why war wasn't a thing to romanticize about.
Inside were many pictures of him with his crew in Burma and a diary and letters he used to send to his parents. Many of them very difficult to read due to the nature of the losses.
My father spent a couple of hours reading them.
They also included letters of thanks from his students who unknown to many he helped way beyond schooling, and in later life.
My Dad left the box there for his closest and next of kin, but as he was saying goodbye, he gave my Dad his watch, an Omega that he had been issued (w.w.w) in approximately 1939/40 which he wore throughout the war and in his school career, right up until his eyesight started to fail.

My father gave me that watch a few of years ago

That is a stunning watch, - but nowhere near to how stunning your story is.

Thank you.

Just looked at Emile's post again , the CW may very well last 100 years , but the chronospace is quartz ? , I dont want to sound negative but I dont believe that will last as long , maybe 20 - 30 years before B runs out of movements ? (Like with the early post 1980 quartz' that Breitling does not have any movements for anymore)

So if you want to leave them to your sons , my suggestion is mechanical watches , not quartz

Great recount Murphy, of you great uncles time in Burma. My father was there too flying with the RAF. Did not want to talk about it much.

Nice Omega to remind you of him also.

Just passed my fathers watch on to one of my great nephews. It's a mechanical watch although a little worse for wear, but recently services and running beautifully. Watches are great items to pass on as a momento of those that have gone.

Hi Dracha. That probably the main reason I chose the Chronospace Automatic. See pic. I hope this one will stand the test of time. ImageImage

Since Breitling replaces any part with wear during their comprehensive service (see their website for a video on the servicing), you are essentially getting a new movement every time it is serviced. Based on that it should last forever.

Not a new movement.

Springs and balance complete replaced as a matter of course, wheels and arbors as needed. Plates, jewels, etc. will never be replaced unless damaged and are likely to be original after 100+ years.

Great thread... Watches can be very sentimental and I love the fact that my daughter's will get to appreciate my collection one day, and think of me!
