The South East Asian Nation of Myanmar, (also known as BURMA), was seized by the Japanese in 1942 during World War Two. The British resistance, came via the :- 2nd & 5th Royal Tank Regiments.
Commanding one of those tanks was my late, great uncle. He was posted there for most of the conflict until being called back to Britain for a week. In that week his tank fell foul of a grenade attack and the replacement commander and one of the crew were killed, losing one of his best friends in the process.
After the war he came home and became Headteacher of a grammar school.
7 years ago he died. My father was very close to him ( and as a boy would beg to hear his stories, but The man wouldn't ever talk about it). When he was ill in 2003/04 and on my fathers last visit, he gave him a box to look through. Telling him this was why war wasn't a thing to romanticize about.
Inside were many pictures of him with his crew in Burma and a diary and letters he used to send to his parents. Many of them very difficult to read due to the nature of the losses.
My father spent a couple of hours reading them.
They also included letters of thanks from his students who unknown to many he helped way beyond schooling, and in later life.
My Dad left the box there for his closest and next of kin, but as he was saying goodbye, he gave my Dad his watch, an Omega that he had been issued (w.w.w) in approximately 1939/40 which he wore throughout the war and in his school career, right up until his eyesight started to fail.
