Avenger Skyland is my first watch that has double AR coating applied. My other watches have either AR applied on the inside of the crystal, or no AR at all. Rolex for example is well-known for no AR at all…Anyway; couple of earlier posts triggered my curiosity on the topic of AR coating. Please help with answers regarding the outside layer of the AR coating:

- AR coating – Is it really long-lasting?
- Will it show heavy wear/tear signs during occasional crystal knocks towards doors, desks, walls…etc?
- Is there time period throughout which you have to replace the entire crystal due to the aging of AR coating (5, 7, 10 years…)?

Hi, Yes the AR coating is very long lasting. While it's not quite as tough as the underlying sapphire crystal it IS very tough indeed. It IS possible to scratch it, but I think you'd have to work fairly hard to do so just by wearing it normally. (You can remove it with polishing compounds, so you need to be careful when you polish the case, but under normal conditions it's extremely tough). You will often find used watches where the cases and bracelets look well used, but the crystal and AR coating is mint. Additionally if you DO manage to sratch the AR, it is often only visible at certain angles and in certain lights as, by it's nature, it is very thin so you can't get deep scratches in it.

In terms of replacement, there is no set time when a replacement crystal might be required. Unless you are unlucky (or very careless!) I can't see why the AR coating wouldn't easily last in excess of 10 years.
