This is a 'this or that' question that I usually don't like to ask but I need to pick one (insurance replacement) and I am really torn between these two.
Both are 47mm Chronomat GMT's with the B04 movement, the Blacksteel looks very cool and has 500m WR but can really only be worn on the Pro3 rubber with Blacksteel clasp which I'm worried I may find restrictive, also there is the worry of getting it damaged as DLC coating can't be refinished as far as I know.....
Vs
The Special Edition satin finished model which has a see through back to see the movement and is engraved in the side of the case with the SE number but only has 200m WR, I could wear this with various bracelet and strap combos.
Both don't have the square on the dial which is a real plus and the main reason I narrowed it down to these two.

Blacksteel is a great finish, but as soon as it gets chipped or scratched then it's a huge deal because it cannot be simply polished. The satin finish for me personally is the way to go.

It depends on if you’re a guy that has a large collection of watches. If so go for the Black Steel, because of the uniqueness. If you don't stick with the Satin so you can change the bands. Changing the bands is the beauty of Breitling to me. 1 watch with 2-3 different looks.

Just my .02, I would definitely go with the stain finish. 200m WR is sufficient unless you're doing a lot of diving and really want to wear your extremely expensive watch while doing so. The blacksteel seems somewhat gimmicky and I feel you could grow tired of it.

On a related note, are there any other newer chronomats, with the in-house movement, that don't have the center square?

I would choose special edition. Not too worried about water resistance as I am not going to use it in water sports, I love the concept of exposing the inhouse movement via case back, brushed finish for that long lasting toughness.

I would take the brushed version as well, although that is one of the better looking blacksteel models in my opinion.

The satin finished for me, no contest.
It is not a Special Edition, it is a Limited Edition, only 2000 made so it may be a bit more difficult to find a new one at an AD.
The satin is far more versatile with numerous straps/bracelet options. Here are a few pics of my somewhat similar looking Chronomat LE to give you an idea what I'm talking about.

This dial seems to be identical to the 47mm without the square, Black onyx I believe, looks stunning, thanks for the pictures, this is really making me lean toward the satin version, I assume yours has the see through back as well?

As much as I love the look of the black I prefer a metal strap

I love my Blacksteel, and the marks to the finish actually add a bit of authenticity to the tough look of it.

It's also very distinctive when you want it to contrast with a shirt or suit.
