I heard that the old pronunciation under old Breitling was "bretling." That under the new ownership they marketed it as "brightling" but still internally call it "bretling." I don't know where I read this. I don't even know if its true. Is it true? And what camp are you in?

It's not true.

It has always been Brightling.

Is it because it's from the German influenced part of Switzerland?

La Chaux-de-Fonds where Breitling first factory was located is in the French speaking part of Switzerland.
Leon's parents were German and migrated to Switzerland in search of work.

Original message deleted by myself very off topic. Sounds like there is no truth to this rumor.

Breitling is pronounced BrightLing - and has always been.

it's the German name of a rather unattractive small fish, a sprat. maybe that's why they now produce such huge watches, compensating ?

No, no, no.
Breit in German means wide which explains the size ;-) You should know better than that Fred :-)
So the English translation of Breitling is simply Wideling!
Alles klar!

Not to forget smoked.

and Wes - "breit" not only means "wide "; the Urban Dictionary would translate it as "stoned".
