There was an MI5 piece sold awhile ago and actually acquired by a member here but that member arranged to return it to the original owner when it turned out that it had been stolen. Quite a complicated process to get it returned because of the nature of the business, but it ended up where it should. This is obviously a different scenario.

That was very nice of the guy who returned it to its original owner and yes I imagine It was very difficult like you said the type of business he dose. I feel sorry for this guy who is having to sell his chances of him ever getting it back will be very slim. I think this watch would make an interesting talking point when out for dinner with the MI5 connection.

The agency commissioned Breitling to make 900 special editions of its Superocean Steelfish to mark its centenary in 2009. The models were offered to all 4,000 MI5 staff at a cost of £1,000 a piece.

So as a UK taxpayer, it looks like we subsidised these, to the tune of what, £1200+ each? So that's probably about £1M of taxpayers money just so MI5 staff can buy a nice watch cheap. No wonder the UK has so much debt. And I seem to recall there was a Police 'Royal Protection Squad' special edition too that was mentioned in a thread somewhere.

For a civilian owner it's all a bit Walter Mitty though don't you think? Wearing an M15 watch without having any legitimate qualification to.

Reminds me of that car salesman in the film " True Lies"

Not sure about the cost being on the tax payer, although nothing surprises me these days. I think that the individual buys the watch at a special price. I believe that's how it works for other brands such as Bremont, who offer up the pieces to legit members of the organisation they are pitching to. My assumption (as I do not have proof of it) is that any left over then might find there way to anyone else who is interested in having a special edition version. I think Bremont have one going with the Paras or the Marines at the moment and one with the Met, if memory serves me correctly. With low numbers though.

They did 900 of the MI5 watch so there are quite a few out there if they actually sold that many. I understand they also did a ladies version.

Am I the only one who thinks it's a little bizarre to put the logo of a covert agency on an item that members of said covert agency can buy and wear, thus running the risk of drawing such comments from people at dinner parties/down the pub as, "That's a nice Breitling you've got there. What's that logo on the dial? Oh MI5? So you work for MI5 do you?"

Hmmm, yes, no doubt excellent for remaining covert.....

Reasonably sure the covert types are NOT buying/wearing those watches. I do tons of work for various gov. agencies and there are many people working 9-5 desk jobs who will tell you flat out what arm of the government they work for; intel agencies included. The field types you would never know of, see, suspect or hear of. The guys that drop the line "I work for the agency" loud enough that you can overhear them are wanna-be-douche-bags. :P Probably the ones buying the watch with the logo in the first place.

Very cool piece. Too bad for the owner having to sell it.

On a side note it would be really cool if we could do a b source type project. I know we have all talked about it before but it would be cool.
