There is an AS BS on ebay. In the pictures it looks like the coating is wearing off on the bezel near the crystal.

Now that this watch has been out a while, does anyone have some first hand experience to report about the coating? I'm interested by these BS watches but I feel like the coating can just rub off...

I would like to see the picture. I can't imagine the coating wearing off. It is a lot tougher than the old PVD coatings that used to kind of wear off, when one piece chipped a bit the rest would kind of flake off. It is a coating nonetheless, and I did manage to get a small ding on the bezel of mine, which went right through to the steel. It is not impenetrable, but I can't imagine it just wearing off from general use, at least not in this short a time. This is a very tough coating, much like you see on better quality tools.
I actually was at my AD yesterday. They are going to look into the cost of replacing the bezel on the Blacksteel and let me know. If the watch you saw does have a lot of scrapes and dings, I believe the bezel can be replaced, but probably for a few hundred dollars. It has been done. When I find out the cost, I will post it here.

Agreed on all counts, and would also be interested in the cost - I have a ding on a rider tab, which of course is integral to the bezel on an AS.

I think those are just areas that whatever he used to polish/clean it wasnt able to get. notice its only along inside edges and around the rider tabs.. I dont think its any type of damage.

That looks a bit strange. In the first pic I thought it had to do with the light coming fromcertain angles, but then when it's in all the pics? I'd drop a question to the seller and hear him out, if it is cleaning residues or anything else.

I had a Porsche Design by IWC years ago and it also had a black coating and after a few years of mild wearing the coating started to wear off on the edges of the watch . Luckily I had a friend who was wild about it and did not mind the metal peeking through the coating, he even liked it (gnarly... ) so he took it off my hands. It was a 100% authentic Porsche Design by IWC, bought new at a very respected jeweller in Antwerp. Just to let you know it is possible these things happen even with respected brands

That's not wear in those pictures, that's the natural colours of the blacksteel where it has been cleaned/not cleaned. My AS BS was the same brand new and with a little gentle cleaning with a soft cloth would come up fine, until it leaked and was returned of course!

These wear/damage concerns (no matter how small) are more than enough for me to say "no thanks", unfortunately, as I think both the Blacksteel AS and SA look great.

Just what I was thinking when I saw the pics of the new one, wont this wear off? Breitling probably has got the coating last and all, but I dont like the look. Shiny, pure metal is always better.
