Hi all, joined a while ago but not posted much until now.

I have an early (1997) Superocean, A17040 (1000m WR, pre-dating the Professional) which is in good condition but needs a service and a re-polish. It's been refurbished by Breitling at least once already (it came with one of Breitling's travel cases), as it has superluminova in the hands and the bezel pip (but not on its original dial, which is now very faint in terms of lume). The crystal, which would originally have been mineral, is in one piece but its AR coating isn't, so I'm wondering whether I should get it replaced if I send it to Breitling for service.

My question: the crystal "sounds" like sapphire when you tap it with a fingernail or a pen - a dull thud. If it's sapphire, the cost of replacement will be £££ so I'll live with the scratches. If mineral, it'll be much cheaper - but I've read that Breitling will always replace mineral with sapphire these days, regardless of what the crystal was originally made of, so the high cost is essentially unavoidable. Anyone have any experience of this?

Breitling does always use Sapphire if they have one available. Generally speaking the only ones that they don't have sapphire replacements for are highly domed ones so I suspect that sapphire will be your only option.

Thanks - thought that might be the case. The crystal isn't trashed, just scratched so I should probably suck it up and live with it (and save £150+ in the process...)
