Hello James,

I take it as you mean the sapphire glass. Sapphire glass is very hard and quite scratch resistant in itself. However, as any material, it is not 100% scratch proof - you will scratch it if you rub it back and forth against gravel or similar...

For normal use and normal care there's no need to add extra protection.

Also the AR coating on the outside is slightly less durable than the sapphire itself, so that can be scratched. That's not to say the AR coating isn't tough - it IS very tough, just not AS scratch resistant as the crystal.

thanks for your help. so the glass part is strong enough that it wont bend at all right? i wear my breitling motors watch every day and am worried that if i hit it against something accidentally the glass on the watch face will break or bend.

i shouldn't have any problems at all should i? i mean breitlings are really solid aren't they?

thanks again for all of your help.

much appreciated.

james.

Sapphire crystal, which is used in all current models (if you are buying a 2 or 3 year old model from the Navitimer range check that it's sapphire) is well known for being tremendously scratch resistant - it's not in the diamond range of scratch resistance, but it's close.

In the thickness that is used on watch crystals it is also unbelievably shatter / crack resistant.

As others have mentioned, it's really only the AR that is at risk, and even that takes some serious effort.

Unless you swing your arms wildly into metal objects while you sleep, the crystal should be fine.

what is AR coating?? sorry i'm a noob. haha

Also, I always keep my breitling in a watch winder at night when i am not using the watch and when it is in the winder, the winder lid doesn't close completely because the watch is too big, so the watch face rubs on the hard plastic glass lid... any problem with that?

please let me know.

thanks again!

AR is Anti Reflective coating, Breitling has it applied on the both sides of the crystal.
I'd put something under the lid of the winder, not strictly because of damage, but constant rub would annoy me.
