Toothpaste to clean

Post subject:  Toothpaste to clean
I heard that one can use toothpaste to clean a Breitling. Does anyone have any expierence with this? Thanks

I personally think toothpaste will corrode your watch's finish. So I heed Lingman's advice, basically I use a mild soap and toothbrush to clean my bracelet and back cover of the watch, I don't use it on the bezel or sides because I don't want the soap to enter the housing through the pushbutton sides of my Montbrillant Olympus.

Hudson County,

I live in South Florida where at this time of year it is unbearably humid and hot. Lings can get quite smudged and dull looking by the end of the day. The humidity here is so bad at this time of year that when you have been inside in the AC for a while and you walk outside your Ling and sunglasses plus any other jewelry you are wearing immediately fog up and develop condensation. Each evening I take my Ling and I put a small dab of shampoo on a toothbrush. I gently run the tooth brush ALL over the Ling front and back, the bracelet ALL OF IT. Then I rinse it off and dry it with a towel. I have been doing this with my Lings for 8 years. It will not hurt anything and when you get up in the morning you will be putting on a freshly washed, SPARKLING Ling, that is if you haven't DEGRADED it with a Leather strap. Naviman has a Navitimer World and he also uses the tooth brush method without any problems and I know you have to be a bit careful with the Navitmers because they are not waterproof but a light brushing with a soft tooth brush and a mild shampoo with a quick rinse will not result in any water damage, just ask Naviman. Toothpaste is definitely WAY OFF BASE ! use any MILD soap like shampoo. Shampoo is mild enough for your hair so it certainly will not hurt a LING !

I couldn't agree more with the previous post. I've heard of people using toothpaste, but I would not choose this method myself. Most watch makers recommend using a mild soap and water, and soft bristle brush to get in between the links and follow up with soaking my bracelets in an ultrasonic cleaner once a week during the humid summer months here.

I've been using plain white regular toothpaste for years to polish the crystals. It works great for that. I started using the toothpaste to restore the plastic covers over the gauges in my vintage cars and figured it would do the same thing for watches and it does. After all, it's just a very fine abrasive paste mix and sort of like a mild polishing compound.

Toothpaste is too harsh on the metal.
In the shop we use "simple green" mixed with water, in the ultrasonic, and a soft brush. Works wonders!

For 10 years, on a weekly basis, Ihave been giving my SuperOcean a thorough cleaning with Sunlight dish detergent. It really sparkles!
