Hi all,
I'm new to this forum and have just bought my self my first Breitling. Its an Emergency from 2004 with a black dial face :D
Its been a dream for me ever since I was a kid! Now, when I check the paper work, it seems to have never been serviced at breitling? The service document is empty...I have everything that came with the watch, box (briefcase) paperwork, VHS casette, tags and so on :cheer:

I understand that the first service is free, but is that still valid when the watch is so old and obviously have been opened by someone else but breitling for battery changes and service?

When I exam the watch closely I see 3299 laser etched on the back of the bracelet, which should mean the watch is from week 32 in 1999? The original receipt is from the first sale in 2004...and I'm the third and final owner!

It's worth contacting Breitling to ask, but I would be surprised if they honour the free service after this amount of time because as you say battery changes would have been performed by someone else. It's possible (probable) that one battery change was done before the sale as there was almost 5 years between production and initial sale.

I agree with what has been said before and you may find that Breitling don't honour the warranty/free first service. Although, I have a work colleague that bought the same vintage of Emergency and had no service history which, shortly after taking ownership, it developed a crown issue (the crown shaft sheared and the crown fell off) and he sent it to BUK expecting to pay a large bill. It was returned to him in full working order and fully serviced looking like new FOC!!! So, you never know.

Re the bracelet. You are right with your date of its manufacture but I wouldn't read too much into it as far as dating the watch. If you remove the bracelet from the south (6 o'clock) side of the case you will see a similar set of numbers on the case between the interhorns which will give the build date of the case. As far as the bracelet is concerned, the original owner may have purchased the watch in 2004 on a rubber or leather strap and he/she or a subsequent owner may have picked up a second hand and older (1999) Pro 1 titanium bracelet at a later date.

I've always had a soft spot for the pre Superquartz® Emergency with the thin arabics. You have bought yourself a great first :lingsrock:

Wait, the first service is free? Is that for all Breitlings or just the Emergency?

Well, the first service was performed in 2008, so I missed that one

I got an estimate to make a complete overhaul, which means that Breitling are going change the old quarts to a new superquarts! They would also replace most of the bracelet, the caps, the "chimney"??, the glass, the bezel and so on. It would be a completely new watch

That would cost me about 1500 €

Is it worth the money? I would think so, but what do you all think?

Wow, 1500 Euro!
Why do you need to replace most of the bracelet, the caps, bezel, chimney, crystal, etc...
These sound to me like optional items.
Can you ask Breitling for a breakdown for mandatory and optional items?
Than decide what you want to do next.

BTW, the chimney is the thin ring between the crystal (glass) and the bezel.
I can see from the picture that the chimney is a bit beaten up hence the most likely reason why the quoting you for a new one. Same most likely for the other parts.
None of it should be mandatory unless it is so bad that it affects the water resistance rating.
Having said all that, they are most likely giving you a ball park figure with all options.
A firm quotation will follow once you send the watch in for inspection.
After that you will still have the right to back out.

Well if you read the asterisked note it becomes clear that a maintenance service for an Emergency is the equivalent of a complete overhaul.

lol
